CHAPTER 2 — THE FILE

CHAPTER 2 — THE FILE

Emma didn’t sleep.

She sat on her couch staring at the photo.

Every few minutes, she checked the locks.

At 2:14 AM, her phone buzzed.

Unknown number:

“He’s not your neighbor. He’s your observer.”

Emma whispered, “Who is this?”

No reply.

The next morning, she confronted Alex.

“You took this?” she held up the photo.

Alex glanced at it.

Then smiled.

“That’s not me.”

Emma stepped back. “Someone is watching me!”

He nodded. “Yes.”

“Who?!”

Alex looked at her for a long moment.

Then said quietly:

“You used to know the answer.”

Emma froze.

“What does that mean?”

Before he could answer—

A black SUV pulled up outside.

Two men in suits stepped out.

Alex’s expression changed instantly.

“Go inside,” he said sharply.

“What is going on?!”

“Now.”

For the first time, he wasn’t calm anymore.

He was… afraid.

Gunshot.

Glass shattered in the hallway.

Emma screamed.

Alex grabbed her wrist.

“Run!”

She yanked away. “I don’t understand any of this!”

He looked at her hard.

“Because you’re supposed to be dead.”

Emma stopped.

“…What?”

Alex pulled something from his pocket.

A military ID card.

He flipped it open.

Emma’s breath stopped.

Her own face.

Her name.

Stamped in red:

STATUS: KIA — 2019

Emma whispered:

“That’s impossible…”

May you like

Alex said:

“No. You just came back.”
