Chapter 4 - The Empty Bottle

I drove home with both hands clenched around the steering wheel.
I was angry enough to scream, but underneath the anger was something worse.
Fear.
Not because Ethan had become a stranger overnight.
Because he had not.
He was still the man who made coffee before I woke up. The man who rubbed my feet when they swelled. The man who had cried with me at our twelve-week ultrasound.
And somehow that same man had walked into our bathroom and placed false evidence beside my sink.
He came home at six.
I held up the photograph.
His shoulders dropped.
“So that part is real,” I said.
“Rachel—”
“You put it there.”
“Yes.”
The honesty hurt more than another lie would have.
“Why?”
“My mother said Harlan needed proof you were taking the prescription.”
“I wasn’t prescribed that medication.”
“I know that now.”
“You knew it then.”
He looked away.
There it was.
The moment a marriage becomes evidence.
He sat across from me. “She told me it was a prop. Something for an insurance appeal. She said the hospital was refusing to approve preventive psychiatric care.”
“And you believed her?”
“I wanted to.”
“No. You wanted not to ask.”
That landed.
He whispered, “Yes.”
For a second, I saw the boy Lorraine had raised. The son who learned peace meant obedience. The husband who confused avoiding conflict with being kind.
Then I remembered the petition.
“You don’t get to be a scared child while I’m the one they’re trying to take a child from.”
His eyes filled.
I stood.
“I’m leaving tonight.”
He panicked. “That will make the filing look true.”
I froze.
Not don’t leave me.
Not I’ll fix this.
His first thought was how my escape would look in court.
I started packing.
While searching for my passport, I found a second phone in the back of his closet.
Ethan went white.
I turned it on.
The message thread with Lorraine was still open.
Package A complete, Ethan had written two weeks earlier.
Lorraine replied: Good. Package B after labor. She’ll be too exhausted to fight.
I looked at him.
“What is Package B?”
“I don’t know.”
This time, I believed he was afraid.
Then another message appeared on the locked screen.
From Lorraine.
Hospital paperwork is ready. Do not let Rachel see the surrender form.
