PART 2 — The Man Who Walked Away

The operating room doors slammed shut.

I never saw Jason again.

Not before the anesthesia.

Not before the surgery.

Not before my world went dark.

The last thing I heard was Dr. Harris.

"Forget the paperwork."

"We're losing the baby's heartbeat."

"Move!"

...

When I opened my eyes...

Everything was quiet.

Too quiet.

My throat hurt.

My stomach burned.

For one terrifying second...

I thought I had lost my baby.

I grabbed the nurse's wrist.

"My son..."

She smiled.

"He's alive."

I burst into tears.

"Where is he?"

"In the NICU."

"He needed help breathing."

"But he's fighting."

Relief washed over me.

Then I looked around the room.

No flowers.

No husband.

No family.

Only Dr. Harris standing by the window.

"You've been awake for two minutes," he said gently.

"And you've already asked about everyone except yourself."

I managed a weak smile.

"That's what moms do."

He nodded.

"I know."

Then his expression changed.

"I also need to tell you something."

My heart sank.

"What happened?"

He hesitated.

"Your husband never signed the surgical consent forms."

I frowned.

"What?"

"You needed an emergency C-section."

"We couldn't wait."

"So under emergency law..."

"I authorized the procedure myself."

I stared at him.

"Where was Jason?"

Dr. Harris looked away.

"Our security cameras answered that."

He handed me a tablet.

The hospital footage began playing.

There I was...

Being rushed toward the operating room.

Jason was running after us.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

Stopped.

Looked toward me.

Looked toward the exit.

Then...

He walked away.

Not slowly.

Not reluctantly.

He ran.

Straight out of the hospital.

I couldn't breathe.

"Who called him?"

Dr. Harris took a slow breath.

"Your mother-in-law."

Another video appeared.

Outside the hospital entrance.

Victoria was shouting.

"I think my blood pressure is high!"

"If you love your mother..."

"You'll come with me!"

Jason didn't hesitate.

He helped her into the car.

While I was being wheeled into emergency surgery.

I stared at the screen.

Unable to blink.

Unable to cry.

Dr. Harris quietly said,

"I've delivered babies for twenty-three years."

"I've seen frightened fathers."

"I've seen fathers faint."

"But..."

"I've never seen one willingly walk away from his wife during a fetal emergency."

A soft knock interrupted us.

A hospital administrator entered with a folder.

"Doctor..."

"The incident report is finished."

He looked at me.

"And because the assault happened on hospital property..."

"The police would like to speak with you."

Before I could answer...

A loud voice echoed down the hallway.

"Where's my grandson?"

Victoria had come back.

This time...

May you like

With a lawyer.
