CHAPTER 1: THE NIGHT THEY THOUGHT THEY WON

CHAPTER 1: THE NIGHT THEY THOUGHT THEY WON

"If you want to stay in this house, you'll resign tomorrow."

I woke up to the sound of electric clippers.

Before I could open my eyes, cold steel scraped across my scalp.

Hair fell onto my pillow.

I screamed.

My mother-in-law stepped back, smiling with the clippers still humming in her hand.

"There," Eleanor said. "Now let's see how confident your company thinks you are."

My husband, Daniel, rushed into the bedroom.

He looked at my half-shaved head.

Then at his mother.

He sighed.

"Mom went too far."

Relief washed over me.

Until he continued.

"But... maybe this is what we needed."

I stared at him.

"What?"

"You've changed."

"You work too much."

"You embarrass me by earning more than I do."

Eleanor folded her arms proudly.

"A wife belongs at home."

I looked around the bedroom.

The king-size bed.

The hardwood floor.

The designer curtains.

Every single thing had been paid for with my paycheck.

Including the mortgage.

Including Daniel's SUV.

Including Eleanor's health insurance.

For three years, they had called me selfish every time I worked late.

But they never once refused the money.

I walked into the bathroom.

The woman in the mirror looked broken.

I picked up the clippers.

And shaved off the rest of my hair myself.

When I came back, Daniel whispered,

"What are you doing?"

I smiled.

"You're right."

"I'll quit."

Eleanor clapped happily.

"I knew you'd finally learn."

At 2:30 a.m., while they slept, I opened my laptop.

One by one, I downloaded every mortgage receipt, insurance payment, tax record, bank transfer, and corporate agreement from the past three years.

Then I canceled every automatic payment coming from my accounts.

Mortgage.

Utilities.

Car loan.

Insurance.

Everything.

Finally, I opened one last folder.

The one Daniel had never known existed.

Its title read:
