Chapter 14 - The Marriage Contingency

I drove to the address Peter sent before Marcus could stop me.

Victoria came anyway.

Marcus followed anyway.

I did not care.

The house sat outside Annapolis behind cedar trees.

Peter opened the door himself.

Older than my father would have been.

Same eyes.

Same crooked left thumb.

My father's brother.

My father.

He looked at me and started crying.

I hated him for that.

"Do not."

He stopped.

I walked past him.

The living room held no photographs.

No family.

No life.

Just boxes.

Records.

Years of hiding.

"Why did Jonathan raise me?"

Peter sat slowly.

"Because I disappeared."

"You chose to."

"I was threatened."

"So you left your child."

"I didn't know Margaret was pregnant until after I was gone."

"Then you found out."

"Yes."

"And stayed gone."

His face collapsed.

"Yes."

I laughed.

"Everybody in this family loves that word."

Victoria stayed near the door.

Marcus placed himself between me and any exits.

Peter opened a box.

Original hospital records.

Margaret Hale.

Infant female.

Biological father field initially blank.

Then amendment.

Jonathan Hale.

Then another hidden amendment request.

Peter Hale.

Rejected.

Signed by Samuel Vance as witness.

I stared.

"Samuel knew."

"Yes."

"Patricia knew?"

"Not then."

"When?"

"Years later."

"Then why send Daniel?"

Peter looked at Marcus.

Marcus answered.

"Because if your biological father was Peter, Patricia believed she could challenge Jonathan's control of certain legacy shares by proving the trust succession was improperly documented."

I looked at him.

"English."

"She thought your identity could destabilize the Hale trust."

"So Daniel married me to get records."

"Yes."

"Not just signatures."

"No."

The marriage had been access.

To me.

To the study.

To my father's files.

To my birth.

Peter said, "Jonathan built the marriage contingency because he knew Patricia would eventually use Daniel."

I turned.

"What exactly was it?"

Marcus opened a file.

Automatic asset freeze.

Independent trustees.

Police contacts.

Medical record locks.

Revocation of spousal authority.

All triggered by documented physical violence or unauthorized trust transfer.

My father's line:

IF DANIEL HITS HER, END IT IMMEDIATELY.

My throat tightened.

Peter said, "Jonathan wanted to protect you."

I stared at him.

"He also let me marry a man he knew was sent to spy on me."

No one answered.

My phone buzzed.

Emergency notification.

Daniel had requested to speak with me.

Again.

This time there was an attachment.

A photo.

Patricia in custody.

Sophie with an attorney.

And Victoria's old crash report.

One highlighted line:

PASSENGER BLOOD TYPE: AB NEGATIVE.

Victoria frowned.

"My blood type is O positive."

I looked at her.

"The woman who died."

"Yes."

Marcus read.

The dead passenger had been recorded as Victoria.

Wrong blood type.

Meaning whoever altered the report did it badly.

Daniel sent another message.

ASK WHO SIGNED IT.

We opened the certification page.

Dr. Elaine Porter.

The same doctor tied to my father's poisoning.

The same doctor documenting my fake instability.

Then one final attachment loaded.

An old photograph.

Dr. Porter standing outside the maternity ward the night I was born.

Beside her:

Patricia.

Michael Cross.

Samuel Vance.

Peter.

And Jonathan.

Every major person in the conspiracy had been at the hospital the night I was born.

Except one.

The photograph had a handwritten note on the back.

MARGARET DID NOT KNOW.

I stared.

"Know what?"

Peter went white.

Marcus looked at him.

"Peter."

He shook his head.

"No."

"What didn't my mother know?"

Peter stood.

Before he could answer, the front window exploded inward.

A bullet hit the wall.

Victoria dragged me down.

Marcus fired toward the trees.

Peter fell behind the sofa.

Then my phone lit with an incoming video.

Patricia.

Calling from custody.

Impossible.

I answered.

Her face appeared.

Not live.

Recorded.

"If Emily is watching this, Peter finally told her the wrong truth."

My blood went cold.

Patricia smiled.

"Now ask him why Margaret thought her baby died."

May you like

CUT.
