Chapter 18 - The Company She Never Wanted

Nora sold the Voss family's private assets before touching worker pensions.
Three houses.
Two planes.
A yacht Celeste had named Legacy.
Alma laughed for a full minute when she heard.
"Of course she named it that."
Nora sold her own inherited lake house too.
That one hurt.
She signed the papers in silence, then sat in her car and cried for twenty minutes.
There was no triumphant soundtrack.
Just rain on the windshield and a baby bottle rolling around the passenger footwell.
The money kept the company solvent long enough to restructure.
Nora hired a professional CEO and stepped down as acting chair after nine months.
Some people called that weakness.
She called it knowing what she did not know.
She remained controlling trustee for Sophie's shares but refused a salary.
The environmental cleanup took years.
So did Nora's recovery.
Her scar pulled when the weather changed.
She hated cliff roads.
For months, she could not sit in a car if another vehicle drove too close behind.
Once, at a red light, a delivery van rolled forward and tapped her bumper.
Nora got out shaking and screamed at the driver until he backed away with both hands raised.
Only later did she realize he was nineteen and terrified.
She found his company number and apologized.
Not because her reaction was mysterious.
Because it was wrong.
Fear explained it.
Fear did not excuse it.
Alma moved into Nora's guest room "temporarily" and stayed eleven months.
She recovered from the fractured cheekbone but developed pain in her left hip from the cliff jump.
Nora offered surgery.
Alma refused twice, then accepted after Sophie learned to crawl and kept chasing her cane.
One evening, Nora found Alma holding the red metal case.
"I thought the police had that."
"They returned it."
"Burn it."
Nora considered.
"No."
Alma frowned.
"Why keep it?"
Nora touched the scratched red lid.
"Because Sophie gets the truth one day. Not the drama. Not the headlines. The records."
Alma nodded slowly.
Then she said, "There is one thing in there you have not read."
Nora looked up.
"What now?"
Alma handed her a sealed envelope in Peter's handwriting.
FOR NORA AFTER SHE WINS.
Nora almost laughed.
