Chapter 20 - One Calm Call

Opening morning was quiet.

A few nurses.

Former coworkers.

Parents.

Then a woman entered carrying a sleeping boy.

She looked exhausted.

“Are you open?”

Boxes were still on the floor.

One computer was frozen.

The coffee machine was leaking.

“Apparently.”

She started crying.

“My daughter is at Children’s.”

“I need somewhere to sit.”

I pulled out a chair.

“That we have.”

She sat.

I sat beside her.

Outside, rain started.

For a second, it sounded like the cemetery.

Then it was just rain.

The woman whispered, “My husband isn’t answering.”

My chest tightened.

I did not tell her my story.

Not then.

“Do you want me to call someone?”

She nodded.

So I took out my phone.

One calm call.

Then another.

Not fifty.

Just what was needed.

Years earlier, David thought silence meant freedom.

I learned silence can be cruelty.

It can also be grief.

Or the space where somebody finally thinks.

The difference is what you do when someone is asking you to listen.

Lily once asked if her dad was coming.

He didn’t.

I could not change that.

The house was gone.

The company changed.

The stolen money was returned.

The convictions became public record.

David lost years.

Julianne built another life.

I built this room.

Not because grief made me wise.

It didn’t.

Grief made me tired.

Forgetful.

Mean sometimes.

Quiet.

Then useful in small ways.

The mother beside me squeezed her phone.

“Thank you.”

I stood.

“Coffee?”

“Black.”

I walked toward the broken machine.

The mother told me her husband finally called back twenty minutes later.

He was driving from Milwaukee.

She cried harder when she heard his voice.

I stepped into the hallway and let them have the call.

For a second I was jealous of a stranger whose husband answered late but not too late.

I let that feeling be ugly and brief.

Then I went back inside and found more chairs.

It hissed at me.

I hissed back.

May you like

And for the first time in a long time, the sound in the room did not feel like an ending.

THE END.
