Chapter 10 - He Chose It Himself

For days, a small part of me had been building the easiest version of the story.

Judith was the architect.

Derek was weak.

He had let his mother manipulate him.

That version still made him guilty, but it left a corner of the man I married untouched.

Dr. Mason destroyed that corner.

“Derek contacted me first,” he said during the recorded interview. “He was concerned Natalie would separate from him after the baby was born.”

“Concerned?” Dana asked.

“He wanted a clinical basis to delay discharge if she became confrontational.”

“Did Mrs. Foster present symptoms supporting that?”

“No.”

“Then why did you alter her chart?”

Mason looked sick.

“Derek had access to internal audit material involving billing irregularities at my practice. He said if I helped him create a safety plan, the review would disappear.”

Blackmail.

My husband had blackmailed my doctor into falsifying my medical record.

Judith had expanded the plan later, but Derek had started it.

Mason produced emails.

The first was dated twelve weeks before Emily’s birth.

Derek: I need documentation before she gets ideas about leaving.

The second:

Mason: I cannot diagnose someone for marital conflict.

Derek: Then don’t diagnose. Document risk.

I walked into the hospital bathroom and locked the door.

Rachel waited outside.

I sat on the closed toilet and stared at the tile until the room stopped moving.

There was no dramatic breakdown.

Just grief arriving without noise.

I had loved Derek for seven years.

I had spent at least three of them translating cruelty into stress, distance into work pressure, control into responsibility.

Now I could see the translation had been my job all along.

When I returned, Dana closed the laptop.

“We have enough to attack the emergency petition and the forged records.”

“Is that enough to keep Emily safe?”

“It is enough to make anyone who wants to take her explain themselves under oath.”

That afternoon, the Ohio court issued a temporary order prohibiting Derek and Judith from using the disputed medical authorization. Derek’s contact with Emily would be supervised until the court reviewed the evidence.

For the first time, I breathed.

Then Allison called.

She had driven to Pennsylvania with Noah and a banker’s box of records her father had hidden in her attic before he died.

Thomas Foster had been investigating Meridian’s postpartum “family stabilization” program.

Not a formal program.

A pattern.

Women connected to powerful Meridian families had been flagged as unstable after delivery. Some were wives. Some daughters. Some daughters-in-law.

Most signed agreements they later regretted.

“How many?” I asked.

Allison opened a folder.

“Twelve names.”

My skin prickled.

Then she turned the page.

At the bottom was a handwritten note from Thomas.

Judith knows about some. Derek knows about one. Someone else is using the system.

Underneath, Thomas had written a single name.

Caleb Mercer.

Rachel frowned. “Who is Caleb Mercer?”

Allison looked at me.

“Judith’s lawyer.”
