Chapter 1: The Call

“Dad… destroy his life.”

For one second, no one moved.

Adrian Vale still held the riding crop in his hand, but the power in his face disappeared like someone had switched off the lights inside him.

“What did you say?” he asked.

Evelyn Carter stayed on her knees, barefoot on the cold white marble, her torn ivory gown gathered around her like broken wings.

She did not repeat herself.

She didn’t need to.

From the phone, a calm male voice answered.

“Finally.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened. “Who is that?”

Evelyn looked at him with quiet eyes.

“My father.”

Vanessa Brooks let out a small laugh from the velvet sofa, but it sounded thinner than before.

“Your father?” she said. “The retired accountant?”

Evelyn slowly turned her head toward her.

“No.”

The locked wooden doors at the end of the grand hall suddenly shook.

Once.

Then again.

Adrian spun around.

“What the hell is that?”

A deep voice boomed from outside.

“Federal warrant. Open the door.”

Vanessa’s champagne flute slipped from her fingers and shattered against the floor.

Adrian stepped backward.

“That’s impossible,” he whispered.

Evelyn finally rose, slowly, painfully, but with a dignity that made the whole room feel smaller than her.

“The cameras were never off,” she said.

Adrian’s eyes snapped to the chandelier.

Then the walls.

Then the diamond pendant around her neck.

His face drained.

Evelyn touched the pendant lightly.

“You thought it was jewelry.”

The doors burst open.

Men in dark suits entered first. Behind them came federal agents, two private security officers, and an older man in a charcoal coat.

Silver hair.

Steel-gray eyes.

William Carter.

One of the richest men in America.

And Evelyn’s father.

Adrian stumbled back as if he had been struck.

“No…”

William didn’t look at him first.

He walked straight to Evelyn.

The fury in his face softened for only one second.

“My girl,” he said quietly.

Evelyn’s control almost broke.

Almost.

But she swallowed it down and lifted her chin.

“I finished it,” she whispered.

William nodded.

“Yes, you did.”

Then he turned to Adrian.

The temperature in the room seemed to drop.

“You put your hands on my daughter,” William said. “You stole through my companies. You used my money to build this house. And you were arrogant enough to leave a paper trail.”

Adrian shook his head fast.

“No, this is a misunderstanding.”

One of the agents stepped forward.

“Adrian Vale, you are being detained pending investigation for financial fraud, obstruction, and conspiracy.”

Vanessa stood up, trembling.

“I had nothing to do with this.”

Evelyn looked at her.

“You signed every false consulting invoice.”

Vanessa froze.

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

For the first time, they stopped being lovers.

And became liabilities.

As the agents moved toward him, Adrian suddenly lunged toward Evelyn.

William’s security team stopped him before he made it three steps.

Adrian struggled, wild-eyed.

“You planned this?” he shouted. “You trapped me?”

Evelyn stared at him.

“No, Adrian.”

Her voice was soft.

“You revealed yourself.”

And as they forced him to his knees on the same marble floor where he had ordered her to kneel, the grand hall fell silent.

Then Evelyn’s phone buzzed.

A message appeared from her father’s legal team.

Ashford Global accounts frozen. Board emergency vote approved. Adrian removed effective immediately.

Evelyn looked down at the screen.

Then at Adrian.

May you like

And for the first time in years…

She smiled.
