CHAPTER 3 — THE TRUTH

CHAPTER 3 — THE TRUTH

“You’re supposed to be dead,” Emily whispered.

“I know,” Michael replied. “That was the point.”

ALARMS.

Red lights flashed.

“They found us,” he said.

“Who?!”

“The people who killed your father.”

Emily froze.

“My father was a teacher.”

Michael shook his head.

“That was the cover story.”

Screens lit up.

Companies. Weapons. Money.

And her name:

EMILY CARTER — CO-OWNER

“This is fake,” she said.

“It’s not,” Michael replied. “You inherited everything.”

BOOM.

Explosion shook the building.

Michael pulled a gun.

Emily stepped back.

“You have a gun?!”

“I’ve had worse pointed at me.”

They ran.

Gunfire behind them.

“WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?!” she screamed.

“The ones who control the truth,” Michael said.

They reached a locked door.

Emily inserted the key.

Nothing.

Michael looked at her.

“There’s one thing I didn’t tell you.”

“What?!”

“You’re not the heir.”

Another explosion.

“You’re the trigger.”

The door opened.

White light swallowed everything.

A voice echoed:

“Welcome back, Director Carter.”

Emily whispered:

“That’s not my name…”

Michael said:

“It is now.”
