Chapter 19 - Day Twenty-Nine

Mara reached the hospital in twelve minutes.
She did not remember the drive.
June had suffered an apnea episode common in premature infants.
Common.
The word did nothing.
A team had stabilized her.
Dr. Kim met Mara at the door.
“She’s breathing.”
Mara grabbed the wall.
“She’s breathing?”
“Yes.”
“Why did you call like—”
Her voice broke.
Dr. Kim did not defend the call.
“We call parents.”
Mara nodded.
Of course they did.
Not everything was a conspiracy.
Learning that felt almost painful.
June needed another forty-eight hours of observation.
Day thirty of the trust arrived while she was still in NICU.
At 12:01 a.m., Lena Ortiz brought coffee and a copy of the court-certified trust transfer.
June Bennett, age thirty days, now held controlling beneficial interest in Cross Meridian through an independent trust.
Mara stared at the document.
“I thought I’d feel something.”
Lena took a sip. “You feel tired.”
“Yes.”
“That counts.”
The board immediately attempted to remove the independent trustee.
They failed.
Federal investigators froze several executive accounts.
Samuel received limited immunity, not full immunity. He would still face charges for fraud and obstruction.
Evelyn was held without bail.
Daniel changed his plea.
Guilty on conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, fraud, evidence tampering.
The murder charge connected to Dr. Cole remained contested because Evelyn had fired the shot.
Mara attended sentencing months later.
Daniel asked to speak.
The judge allowed it.
He turned toward Mara.
“I loved you.”
Mara’s face did not change.
“I know that sounds impossible.”
“It sounds irrelevant,” she said.
The judge looked at her, then back to Daniel.
Daniel swallowed.
“I thought if I lost the company, I’d lose everything.”
Mara looked at him.
“You did.”
He cried.
She did not.
After court, Claire waited on the steps with June in a carrier.
Teresa stood beside her using a cane.
Mara walked toward them.
For the first time in months, she felt the day ahead instead of the day behind.
Then Lena called her name.
“There’s one final document.”
Mara groaned. “Burn it.”
Lena smiled. “You may want this one.”
It was a sealed letter from Charles Cross, written before his death.
Addressed not to Daniel.
Not to Evelyn.
May you like
To the first child who survives them.
