CHAPTER 3: THE PERSON BEHIND THE WHEEL

CHAPTER 3: THE PERSON BEHIND THE WHEEL

The detective placed a photograph on my bed.

My blood ran cold.

It was the truck driver.

A middle-aged man.

Ordinary.

Forgettable.

"Who is he?" I asked.

The detective sighed.

"He confessed."

My stomach tightened.

"To what?"

The detective looked uncomfortable.

"He was paid."

The room seemed to shrink.

Paid.

Someone paid him to hit my car.

I felt sick.

"Who?"

The detective hesitated.

Then placed down another photo.

Ashley.

The room exploded.

"No."

The detective nodded.

"We traced financial records."

My hands shook.

Ashley.

The pregnant girlfriend.

The woman smiling beside my husband.

She wanted me dead.

Why?

The answer came quickly.

Because if I died...

Nathan inherited everything.

The house.

My savings.

My investments.

Everything.

And then something even worse happened.

The detective slid another document across the bed.

A bank transfer.

Signed by Nathan.

I stared at it.

Unable to breathe.

Unable to think.

Unable to move.

Because Nathan hadn't just known.

He helped pay for it.

The betrayal hurt more than the accident.

More than the divorce.

More than anything.

Six months later, both Ashley and Nathan stood trial.

The evidence was overwhelming.

The jury didn't take long.

Guilty.

Both of them.

As the judge read the sentence, Nathan looked back at me.

Tears in his eyes.

"I'm sorry."

For once, I believed him.

It didn't matter.

Some apologies arrive too late.

A year later, I sat in a park holding my son.

Healthy.

Happy.

Alive.

The doctors called him a miracle.

I agreed.

The truck nearly took everything from me.

My marriage.

My future.

My life.

Instead, it revealed the truth.

And sometimes the truth is the greatest gift of all.

My phone buzzed.

A news alert appeared.

Nathan Parker's appeal denied.

I smiled.

Deleted the notification.

And returned my attention to the little boy laughing in my arms.
