Chapter 5 - BOX 417

The bank was closed.
Ethan knew the regional president.
Of course he did.
Thirty-five minutes later, I was walking through a private entrance in my wedding dress while a security officer tried very hard not to stare.
My mother carried the key.
Ethan carried the photograph.
I carried nothing.
I trusted neither of them.
Box 417 required two keys.
My mother had one.
The bank had the other.
Inside the viewing room, the employee placed a long metal box on the table.
“Take all the time you need.”
The door closed.
Diane’s hands shook.
I opened the box.
There were no diamonds.
No cash.
No dramatic stacks of secret documents.
Just three envelopes.
A cassette tape.
A birth certificate.
And a sealed letter addressed to me.
SARAH ELIZABETH MITCHELL.
OPEN ON YOUR WEDDING DAY.
My grandfather’s handwriting.
I tore it open.
Sarah,
If you are reading this, I failed to fix what I helped break.
Do not trust the story you were raised with.
Thomas Mercer did not abandon Diane.
Richard made sure he could never come back.
My breath stopped.
I looked at Ethan.
“Mercer?”
He nodded.
“My father.”
I kept reading.
Thomas discovered Richard was moving money through my company.
When Thomas threatened to report him, Richard threatened Diane.
I chose my son-in-law over the truth.
I have regretted it every day since.
There is proof.
Listen to the tape.
I dropped the letter.
My mother was crying silently.
“You knew?”
“Not all of it.”
“You knew enough.”
“I was twenty-five and pregnant.”
The room tilted.
“Pregnant?”
She looked at me.
Ethan went completely still.
I heard myself ask the question before I understood why.
“Who was the baby?”
My mother’s face crumpled.
“You.”
No one moved.
I looked at the birth certificate.
The father’s line had been altered.
I could see faint typing beneath Richard Mitchell’s name.
Thomas Mercer.
Ethan stepped backward so hard his chair hit the wall.
I looked at him.
Then at my mother.
Then at the man I had almost married.
“No.”
Diane whispered my name.
“No.”
My voice broke.
“Tell me he isn’t.”
Ethan stared at the birth certificate.
His face had gone gray.
My mother began shaking her head.
But she was too late.
The possibility was already inside the room.
The man I had kissed.
Loved.
Shared a bed with.
May you like
Almost married.
Might be my brother.
