CHAPTER 1 - The Groom Who Left the Altar

I was supposed to be the happiest woman alive.

That was what everyone kept telling me.

"Sarah, you're glowing."

"Look at you. You're finally getting your fairytale."

"You two are perfect together."

And I wanted to believe them.

The old church had never looked more beautiful.

White roses climbed the stone walls.

Candles flickered along the aisle.

Sunlight poured through the stained-glass windows, painting the floor in shades of gold and blue.

My wedding day.

The day I had dreamed about since I was a little girl.

I stood beside Ethan, holding his hand.

He looked exactly like the man I had fallen in love with.

Calm.

Handsome.

Warm.

The man who had promised me that I was his future.

But something felt wrong.

At first, I couldn't explain it.

Then I noticed.

Ethan wasn't looking at me.

Every few seconds, his eyes moved toward the side entrance of the church.

Toward the old garden path behind the building.

I followed his gaze.

Nothing.

Just flowers.

Trees.

Silence.

"Ethan?"

He looked back at me quickly.

"What?"

"You okay?"

A small smile appeared on his face.

"I'm perfect."

But he wasn't.

I knew him.

Better than anyone.

Something was happening.

The priest cleared his throat.

"We are gathered here today..."

The guests became quiet.

The photographer lifted his camera.

Everyone prepared for the moment they had been waiting for.

Then Ethan stepped backward.

Just one step.

I frowned.

"Ethan?"

He looked at me.

And for one second...

I saw fear in his eyes.

Not doubt.

Not hesitation.

Fear.

Then he whispered,

"I'm sorry."

Before I could ask what he meant...

He turned around.

And walked away.

From our wedding.

The church went silent.

People looked confused.

Someone laughed nervously, thinking it was a joke.

It wasn't.

"Ethan?"

My voice shook.

He didn't stop.

He disappeared through the side doors.

My heart started racing.

I lifted my dress and followed him.

I didn't know why.

Maybe because I needed an explanation.

Maybe because some part of me was terrified of what I would find.

Outside, the cold air hit my face.

I followed the sound of voices.

Then I saw him.

Under the old oak tree behind the church.

Standing with a woman.

My breath stopped.

She wore a dark dress.

A scarf covered her hair.

Her back was turned toward me.

Ethan stepped closer.

And then...

He hugged her.

Not a casual hug.

Not a friendly embrace.

The kind of hug that belonged to two people who had been separated for years.

Then he kissed her.

My world collapsed.

My bouquet slipped from my hand.

The flowers landed in the grass.

I couldn't breathe.

The man I was supposed to marry...

Was holding another woman on our wedding day.

I stepped out from behind the wall.

"Ethan."

He froze.

Slowly...

He turned around.

His face changed instantly.

"Sarah..."

The woman beside him looked away.

Like she was ashamed.

Like she knew me.

I walked toward them.

My voice trembled.

"Who is she?"

Ethan opened his mouth.

But no words came out.

I looked at the woman.

Something about her felt familiar.

The way she stood.

The way she held her hands.

The way she avoided my eyes.

My anger disappeared.

Replaced by confusion.

I reached for the scarf covering her face.

Ethan grabbed my wrist.

"Sarah, wait."

"No."

My voice broke.

"I deserve to know."

I pulled the scarf away.

The woman slowly looked up.

And the entire world stopped.

Because the woman standing in front of me...

Was not Ethan's secret lover.

She was the person who had raised me.

The person who taught me how to walk.

How to dream.

How to survive.

My mother.

I stared at her.

Unable to speak.

Then one word escaped my lips.

"Mom?"

My mother closed her eyes.

And whispered:

"I'm sorry you had to find out this way."

I looked between her and Ethan.

"Find out what?"

Neither of them answered.

And somehow...

That scared me more than the kiss.

Because I realized something.

The wedding hadn't been interrupted by a betrayal.

It had been interrupted by a secret.

May you like

A secret everyone knew...

Except me.
