Chapter 4 - The Cousin in the Tuxedo

Nathan Harrow had been in my wedding party.

He was supposed to stand two places behind Adrian at the altar.

He never showed.

Everyone assumed he was drunk.

That was believable because Nathan had built his personality around making bad choices entertaining.

At 3:31 p.m., while Adrian stood in front of two hundred guests, Nathan sat in a hotel office wearing a matching tuxedo and completed a lender identity check.

The facial verification system flagged low confidence.

Someone manually approved it anyway.

The override came from an account belonging to Harrow Hospitality’s chief technology officer, Miles Kerr.

Miles was also missing from the ceremony.

This was no longer Evelyn pouring wine into a bathtub because she hated me.

The dress was theater.

The real plan had been moving while everyone watched the wedding.

Dana called the closing agent and placed the transaction into dispute.

Adrian called the bank.

I called a judge through my attorney’s emergency line.

By 4:12 p.m., the closing was frozen pending review.

Twelve minutes late if the forged package had gone unchallenged.

Early enough because title had not yet transferred.

Evelyn learned about the freeze in the hotel corridor.

I watched her read the message.

Then she looked at me.

“You have no idea what you’ve done.”

I was tired of that sentence.

“Everyone keeps telling me that right before I find another spreadsheet.”

Her eyes flashed.

“You think because you learned forensic accounting at some public university—”

“Scholarship girl,” I said. “Remember?”

She stopped.

I continued.

“You have called me that for two years. So let’s keep the terms simple. Your brother was being paid millions by your company. Your son’s credentials were used without his permission. Your husband’s approval was attached to papers he says he did not sign. And six hotels were almost sold to your brother’s fund at a discount of roughly seventy million dollars.”

“You do not understand the debt structure.”

“Then explain it.”

She looked away.

Exactly.

Adrian walked toward us.

“Where is Nathan?”

“I don’t know.”

“Mom.”

“I said I don’t know.”

“Did you ask him to impersonate me?”

“No.”

The denial sounded weaker than the others.

Then Richard’s nurse approached pushing his wheelchair.

Richard looked exhausted.

He lifted his hand toward me.

I crouched.

“What?”

He struggled.

“Key.”

“Key?”

He tapped his jacket pocket.

The nurse helped him retrieve a brass hotel room key.

Old-fashioned.

Heavy.

Not used in Harrow hotels for decades.

Stamped on one side:

THE ASHLAND — 814.

The Ashland was Harrow Hospitality’s original property.

Built in 1937.

Still operating downtown.

Richard pushed the key into my palm.

“Eight… fourteen.”

Adrian knelt beside him.

“Dad, what’s in room 814?”

Richard looked at Evelyn.

Fear crossed her face.

That was answer enough.

She stepped forward.

“Richard is tired. This is cruel.”

Richard hit the arm of his wheelchair.

“Claire.”

My name came out clearly.

He pointed at the key.

Then at me.

“Go.”

Adrian looked at his father.

“Together?”

Richard nodded.

Evelyn said, “Absolutely not.”

Nobody listened.

We left the wedding hotel in two cars.

Me, Adrian, Dana, and two security officers in the first.

Richard remained behind with his nurse because he was exhausted.

Halfway to The Ashland, Adrian’s phone buzzed.

A message from Nathan.

BRO, I MESSED UP.

Then another.

YOUR MOM SAID YOU ALREADY AGREED.

Then:

MILES HAS THE ORIGINAL DRIVE.

Adrian called.

No answer.

He texted.

WHERE ARE YOU?

The reply came thirty seconds later.

DON’T GO TO 814.

Adrian showed me.

“Why?” I asked.

Nathan replied.

BECAUSE MILES IS ALREADY THERE.
