Chapter 10 - The Backup Plan

I tore through the front door before Julian reached the foyer.
"Let her go!"
The driver flinched.
Lily twisted hard and bit his hand.
He shouted.
She ran.
I caught her halfway across the gravel and lifted her against my chest.
"Daddy!"
"I've got you."
Her whole body shook.
The driver backed toward the SUV.
Julian stepped onto the porch.
"Don't be stupid, Aaron."
Aaron stopped.
Sarah came out behind Julian.
"You brought her here?"
Her voice cracked.
Julian did not turn.
"We needed leverage."
"She's six."
"She's a beneficiary."
Sarah stared at him as if she were seeing him for the first time.
I moved Lily behind me.
"Get in the house," I whispered.
She clung to my coat.
"No."
"Lily."
"No."
I did not force her.
Julian stepped off the porch.
"Marcus, give me the amendment. We all go home."
"It's already copied."
"The original matters."
"Not enough to trade my daughter."
Sarah moved between us.
"Julian, this is over."
He laughed.
"You don't get to say over."
"The plan was an incapacity petition."
"The plan was control."
"Nobody was supposed to get hurt."
"Nobody has to."
He glanced toward the broken porch railing.
Then toward me.
The meaning was clear.
Sarah shook her head.
"You said the beach stairs were a contingency."
"They are."
"For an accident?"
Julian's face hardened.
"For a resolution."
I felt Lily's fingers dig into my coat.
"What happens after I fall?" I asked.
Julian looked almost bored.
"Sarah becomes the grieving spouse. Child services places Lily temporarily while your capacity and estate matters are sorted."
"And the trust?"
"My copy governs until challenged."
"Your forged copy."
He shrugged.
"Documents are what courts can prove."
Sarah whispered, "What about me?"
Julian finally looked at her.
"You inherit marital assets. Insurance. You'll be fine."
"That wasn't our deal."
"Deals change."
Something in Sarah's face collapsed.
Not guilt.
Certainty.
She had finally realized she was expendable.
Julian pointed toward Lily.
"Bring her inside."
Aaron hesitated.
"She bit me."
"Then use your other hand."
I stepped forward.
"Touch her and I'll—"
Sarah cut across me.
"Marcus, stop."
I looked at her.
She was staring at Julian's leather bag on the porch.
The zipper had opened when he ran outside.
Inside was a small brown medicine bottle.
Same shape.
Same white pharmacy label.
I moved closer.
Julian noticed.
He kicked the bag shut.
Too late.
I had seen the name.
JULIAN HALE.
The medication Sarah used on Lily came from him.
Sarah saw it too.
"You told me those were untraceable samples."
Julian's eyes narrowed.
"This isn't the time."
"You gave me your prescription?"
"Sarah."
"You said no paper trail."
I watched panic move through her face.
If the bottle tied the dosing to Julian, it also tied Sarah to him.
Evidence.
Real evidence.
I lowered my voice.
"Sarah, he kept everything traceable to you except the money."
Julian stepped toward me.
"Enough."
"The videos are on her phone. The school reports came from her. The marriage is hers. If this goes bad, who goes to prison first?"
Sarah's breathing turned shallow.
Julian reached behind his coat.
She saw it.
So did I.
Her hand shot out and caught his wrist.
"No."
He twisted violently.
Sarah cried out.
A metallic object flashed between them.
Lily screamed.
I shoved her toward the side of the house.
"Run!"
She froze.
Julian wrenched free.
A handgun came out of his coat.
Everything slowed.
Sarah stepped in front of him.
"Put it down."
His mouth tightened.
"Move."
"No."
For the first time since this began, Sarah stood between my daughter and the plan she had helped build.
It did not erase anything.
But it changed the next second.
Julian lifted the gun.
Sarah grabbed his forearm.
The weapon jerked sideways.
A sharp crack split the air.
The gunshot had not hit Sarah cleanly; the round grazed the outside of her upper arm and buried itself in the porch siding.
She stared at the blood as if surprised her body could bleed.
Julian used that second to pull free.
"You stupid—"
He raised the gun again.
I moved Lily behind the stone planter and stepped into the open.
"Look at me."
Julian did.
"You want the original amendment?"
His breathing slowed.
"Where is it?"
"Not here."
"I don't believe you."
"Then shoot me and never find it."
Sarah pressed her sleeve against the wound.
"Marcus, don't."
I kept my eyes on Julian.
"You need me alive long enough to retrieve it."
He lowered the barrel half an inch.
Good.
Talking bought seconds.
My phone was still recording in my pocket.
Priya knew the location.
State police were supposed to be coming.
I just did not know whether they were five minutes away or twenty.
"Where did Hannah keep it?" Julian asked.
"You tell me. You had people in this house before she died."
His eyes narrowed.
"Careful."
"Sarah was one of them. Who else?"
Sarah looked at him.
That question bothered her too.
Julian's jaw flexed.
"You think your family was clean because Hannah smiled in photographs?"
"What does that mean?"
He gave me a small, ugly smile.
"Ask Evelyn who gave Hannah the first copy of the forged page."
My concentration broke for half a heartbeat.
Sarah said, "What are you talking about?"
Julian glanced at her.
"You never wondered why Hannah knew exactly which page to challenge?"
Sarah's face changed.
Another secret.
Another fracture.
I heard a distant siren then.
Barely audible through the wind.
Julian heard it too.
He raised the gun again.
The talking was over.
Lily crouched behind the planter, crying without sound.
I could see only the top of her hair.
I pointed toward the side gate without taking my eyes off Julian.
"When I say go, you run to the mailbox and keep running until you see a police car."
She shook her head.
"I don't want to leave you."
My throat tightened so fast it hurt.
"This is one of those times you don't have to want to. You just have to do it."
Sarah looked at Lily, then at the blood spreading down her own sleeve.
"Listen to your dad," she said.
Lily stared at her.
For a second, Sarah's face folded under the weight of that look.
Then Julian shifted the gun toward me again, and the moment vanished.
Lily screamed my name.
Sarah dropped to one knee.
Julian stared at the gun in his hand.

I lunged.
