Chapter 10 - The Highway Pursuit

The rain began to fall in heavy, greasy sheets, turning the highway asphalt into an oily mirror.

My wipers slapped against the windshield on high speed. In my rearview mirror, the black SUV didn't back off; it accelerated, its high beams filling my cab with blinding white light.

I slammed my foot to the floor. The Ram's speedometer crept past eighty, the chassis vibrating under the strain of the heavy work toolbox in the bed.

The SUV surged forward, slamming violently into my rear bumper.

The impact jerked my seatbelt against my collarbone, sending my truck fish-tailing across two lanes of wet highway. I fought the wheel, countering the skid, tires screaming before the treads caught asphalt again.

They're not trying to stop me, I realized. They're herding me.

Ahead, the illuminated green highway sign flashed through the downpour: EXIT 14 - HIGHWAY 9 INDUSTRIAL CORRIDOR.

The location of the Apex storage facility from Sarah's basement notes.

The SUV rammed me again, hard on the left rear quarter panel, trying to force my truck down the off-ramp.

I didn't fight the turn this time. I yanked the steering wheel hard right, riding the brakes as the truck slid down the sweeping concrete ramp, spraying gravel as the tires bit into the shoulder.

At the bottom of the ramp, the industrial park spread out into a desolate grid of corrugated metal warehouses, tall cyclone fences topped with razor wire, and rows of dead semi-trailers.

Parked directly in front of Unit 44 was Mrs. Harris’s gray Caravan, its hazards blinking rhythmically in the dark.

Both front doors were wide open.

And lying face-down in the gravel beside the open sliding door was a body in a yellow raincoat.
