Chapter 11 – The Forty-Second Floor

That afternoon, I drove downtown alone.

The elevator opened onto the forty-second floor of Vale Meridian Holdings. Marble floors. White orchids. Receptionists trained to smile without warmth.

The assistant behind the desk stiffened immediately.

“Mrs. Calder,” she said carefully. “Mr. Vale isn’t available.”

“I’m not here for Mr. Vale.”

I placed a business card on the counter.

“I’m here for the board.”

Twenty minutes later, I sat inside a glass conference room overlooking the frozen city while six executives stared at me like I had carried gasoline into a cathedral.

Preston arrived last. Furious.
