PART 4: The Past He Thought Would Destroy Me

The interrogation room fell silent.

No one spoke.

Richard leaned back in his chair, wearing the first genuine smile he'd managed since the handcuffs clicked around his wrists.

Marcus slowly turned toward me.

"Commander..."

"...what happened in Kosovo?"

For a long moment, I said nothing.

Some memories don't fade.

They simply wait.

"I was thirty-eight," I finally said.

"I commanded a hostage recovery unit."

Richard laughed.

"Tell them the rest."

I ignored him.

"Our mission was to rescue thirty-two civilians trapped inside an abandoned factory."

Marcus listened quietly.

"The intelligence was wrong."

"There weren't thirty-two hostages."

"There were over a hundred."

The room remained perfectly still.

"We got almost all of them out."

"Almost?"

I closed my eyes.

"My partner didn't."

His name was Daniel Mercer.

The finest officer I'd ever known.

He stayed behind so the last bus carrying children could escape.

He never came back.

For years...

I blamed myself.

After the funeral, I resigned.

I turned down promotions.

I refused every government appointment they offered.

I came home to raise Lily.

That was the life I chose.

Richard smiled wider.

"And who was Daniel Mercer?"

I already knew where he was going.

"The Chief of Police's older brother."

Marcus frowned.

"The former Chief?"

I nodded.

"Yes."

Richard spread his hands triumphantly.

"So now everyone understands."

"You abandoned him."

Before anyone else could react, another voice interrupted.

"That's not what happened."

Everyone turned.

An elderly man stood in the doorway wearing a dark blue suit covered with military decorations.

Despite the cane in his hand, his posture remained perfectly straight.

Marcus recognized him immediately.

"General Thomas Calloway?"

The retired four-star general nodded once.

"I was Arthur Bennett's commanding officer."

He walked into the room carrying a weathered leather folder.

"I've spent fifteen years waiting for the day these files could finally be released."

Richard's smile disappeared.

General Calloway placed the folder on the table.

"Operation Black Lantern."

The once-classified mission file.

He opened the first page.

"The mission failed because classified intelligence was leaked forty-eight hours before deployment."

Marcus looked up.

"Leaked?"

"Yes."

The General turned another page.

"Someone sold the rescue route."

Richard shifted uncomfortably.

"The investigation remained classified because revealing it would have compromised ongoing operations."

Marcus asked quietly,

"Did you ever find the person responsible?"

"We did."

The General slid a photograph across the table.

Richard stared at it.

His face turned white.

"No..."

The photograph showed a younger Daniel Mercer.

Standing beside another man.

Richard's father.

Edward Holloway.

"No..." Richard whispered again.

"That's impossible."

General Calloway's voice never changed.

"Edward Holloway owned the logistics company hired to transport humanitarian supplies."

"He secretly sold troop movements to an international weapons broker."

Marcus looked from the file to Richard.

"The ambush..."

"...was caused by your father."

The General nodded.

"Daniel Mercer died trying to save civilians from an attack your father made possible."

Richard slammed his fists against the table.

"You're lying!"

General Calloway quietly removed one final document.

A signed confession.

Edward Holloway had admitted his role six months before dying of cancer.

The confession had remained sealed because it referenced ongoing intelligence operations.

Arthur Bennett's name appeared only once.

Recommendation for the nation's highest civilian bravery award.

Declined by recipient.

Reason:

'I failed to bring everyone home.'

Marcus looked at me.

"You refused the award?"

I nodded.

"There were families still grieving."

"It didn't feel right to celebrate."

Richard looked completely lost.

"My father told me..."

"...he said you sacrificed Daniel to save your own career."

I met his eyes.

"No."

"I sacrificed my career because I couldn't save Daniel."

The room fell silent again.

Richard slowly lowered his head.

Everything he had believed about me...

Everything his father had taught him...

Had been a lie.

Just then, Agent Ruiz entered carrying another evidence bag.

"Marcus."

"You need this."

Inside was the final forensic report from Richard's office computer.

The cyber team had decrypted a hidden archive.

More than eight hundred encrypted emails.

Most involved business deals.

One didn't.

Marcus opened it.

The sender:

Edward Holloway.

The recipient:

Richard Holloway.

Sent eleven years earlier.

Richard frowned.

"I've never seen that."

Marcus clicked the message.

Only one sentence appeared on the screen.

Arthur Bennett must never learn why I chose his daughter.

Every person in the room stopped breathing.

Richard stared at the words.

"My father..."

"...chose Lily?"

Marcus looked up slowly.

"It wasn't a coincidence that you met her."

General Calloway quietly closed the mission file.

"No."

"It was revenge."

Richard's hands began to shake.

He wasn't looking at me anymore.

He was staring at the email.

At the realization that his marriage...

His carefully planned life...

Even the woman he claimed to love...

Had all begun with someone else's hatred.

And somewhere in the evidence archive...

There had to be one more answer.

Why Edward Holloway had wanted revenge against a man who had actually tried to save his partner.

Marcus turned to the cyber investigator.

"Find every message."

"I want the entire chain."

Because the truth wasn't finished yet.

May you like

It had only just begun.
