Chapter 2 — The Camera That Changed Everything

Nobody moved.

Not because Sarah Chen was the loudest person in the backyard.

She wasn't.

She spoke calmly.

Professionally.

But there was something in her voice that made everyone understand.

This was no longer a family argument.

This was a crime scene.

Tyler forced a laugh.

"Excuse me?"

He looked around at the guests.

"This is insane."

"My sister is upset."

"She just had an accident."

Sarah didn't look at him.

She continued checking my vitals.

"Sir, I didn't ask for your explanation."

Tyler's smile disappeared.

"I was just saying—"

"I heard you."

She finally looked up.

"And now I'm asking everyone to stay where they are until law enforcement arrives."

My mother stepped forward immediately.

"Do you know who you're talking to?"

Sarah calmly replied,

"Yes."

"He's the man standing beside a woman with a possible spinal injury."

"And right now, my only concern is her medical condition."

That was the first time in my life...

Someone had defended me without caring about my family's name.

The ambulance ride was a blur.

The ceiling lights above me moved as they rolled me through the hospital.

Doctors asked questions.

Nurses checked my spine.

Everyone moved quickly.

But my mind stayed on one thing.

My legs.

"Can you feel anything?"

The doctor asked.

I swallowed.

"No."

He exchanged a glance with the nurse.

Not a good sign.

"Bridget, we're going to run more tests."

I nodded.

But I already knew.

Something had changed.

Three hours later...

My attorney, Daniel Brooks, arrived.

Grandmother Rose had hired him years ago to handle her company matters.

He was one of the few people my family couldn't manipulate.

He walked into my hospital room carrying a folder.

"I heard what happened."

I looked away.

"I didn't think Tyler would actually do it."

Daniel sat down.

"People reveal themselves when they believe they are losing control."

I looked at him.

"Do you think he meant to hurt me?"

Daniel was quiet.

That answer hurt more than words.

"I think Tyler knew exactly what he was doing."

The next morning...

The police interviewed everyone.

And everyone had a different story.

My mother said:

"Tyler was upset, but he would never hurt his sister."

My father said:

"It was an emotional argument."

Tyler said:

"She lost her balance."

A simple sentence.

A perfect sentence.

The kind of sentence people used when they wanted an accident without responsibility.

But then Marcus walked into the station.

And everything changed.

Detective Alvarez placed a photograph on the table.

A screenshot from the security system.

"Mr. Bennett."

Marcus looked nervous.

The detective continued.

"You installed these cameras?"

Marcus nodded.

"Yes."

"Then you know exactly where the recordings are stored."

Silence.

Marcus looked down.

"Yes."

The detective leaned forward.

"Why did you access the security system five minutes after Bridget's fall?"

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew.

The question wasn't why.

It was why he thought nobody would notice.

Later that afternoon...

The police recovered the footage.

The entire family was asked to watch.

Tyler refused at first.

"I don't need to see this."

Detective Alvarez looked at him.

"Actually, you do."

The video appeared.

The second-floor deck.

The party guests.

The argument.

My back against the railing.

Tyler walking forward.

Then...

The push.

The room became silent.

My mother's hand covered her mouth.

My father closed his eyes.

Even Tyler stopped pretending.

Because the camera showed the truth.

Not an accident.

Not a misunderstanding.

A choice.

But the footage showed something else.

Something nobody expected.

After Tyler pushed me...

He didn't immediately call for help.

He looked around.

At the guests.

At the broken railing.

Then he turned to Marcus.

And said:

"Get rid of the footage."

The room went completely still.

Tyler looked at Marcus.

"Tell them it's edited."

Marcus looked terrified.

"I can't."

Tyler's face changed.

"You promised."

Detective Alvarez paused the video.

Then looked at Tyler.

"Promised what?"

For the first time...

Tyler had no answer.

The investigation continued.

And the truth became bigger than anyone expected.

Marcus finally confessed.

Not because he wanted to.

Because he knew the footage had already destroyed him.

He admitted Tyler had asked him to delete the recording.

But there was something else.

Something hidden in the security files.

A series of messages between Tyler and their father.

The messages were from before the party.

Daniel opened the file.

Then looked at me.

"Bridget..."

"What?"

His expression was serious.

"Your father knew Tyler was planning to confront you."

My stomach dropped.

"What?"

Daniel turned the laptop toward me.

One message was highlighted.

From Harold.

"You need to make her understand. She can't walk away with everything."

I stared at the screen.

My own father.

The man who watched me fall.

The man who told me to stop making a scene.

He knew.

Maybe not every detail.

Maybe not the exact moment.

But he knew Tyler was dangerous.

And he did nothing.

That evening...

My mother came to the hospital.

For the first time in my life...

She looked afraid.

Not angry.

Afraid.

"Bridget..."

I didn't answer.

She sat beside the bed.

"Your father made a mistake."

I looked at her.

"A mistake?"

My voice was quiet.

"He watched his son become violent because he cared more about an inheritance than his daughter."

She started crying.

"We're still your family."

I looked away.

"Family doesn't watch you fall."

Silence.

Then she whispered:

"Your grandmother knew."

I turned back.

"What?"

My mother's face changed.

"She knew Tyler would eventually show his true colors."

"That's why she changed the will."

My heart stopped.

"What are you saying?"

My mother reached into her purse.

And pulled out an envelope.

A letter.

With Grandmother Rose's handwriting.

"She left this for you."

I stared at the envelope.

Because suddenly...

I understood.

Grandmother hadn't just left me her fortune.

She had left me a warning.

I opened the letter.

Only one sentence was written inside.

"Bridget, if you are reading this, it means Tyler finally showed you who he really is."

My hands began to shake.

Then I read the next line.

And everything changed.

"But there is one thing you don't know about your inheritance..."

May you like

Because the estate Tyler tried to steal wasn't just money...

And Grandmother Rose had prepared one final protection that would expose exactly why your family wanted you to disappear.
