CHAPTER 2: THE WOMAN THEY FIRED

CHAPTER 2: THE WOMAN THEY FIRED

The next morning, I walked into Whitmore Tower.

The headquarters of a multi-billion-dollar empire.

I still thought there had been some mistake.

There had to be.

I wasn't rich.

I wasn't connected.

I didn't even know Arthur Whitmore.

At least I thought I didn't.

Inside the boardroom sat twelve executives.

And one very angry Vanessa Cole.

The moment she saw me, she laughed.

"Lost, Lauren?"

Nobody else laughed.

Interesting.

I took a seat.

Vanessa frowned.

"That's not your chair."

The chairman adjusted his glasses.

"Actually, it is."

Vanessa blinked.

"What?"

The chairman stood.

"Arthur Whitmore's final will has been verified."

A screen lit up behind him.

My photograph appeared.

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

The chairman continued.

"Effective immediately, Lauren Mitchell becomes majority owner of Whitmore Technologies."

Silence.

Pure silence.

Vanessa looked physically ill.

"What is happening?"

The chairman handed me a folder.

Inside was a letter.

Written by Arthur Whitmore.

My hands trembled as I read it.

"Lauren,"

"You don't know me as Arthur Whitmore."

"You knew me as the old janitor who worked in your building."

I froze.

The janitor.

Mr. Arthur.

The elderly man everyone ignored.

The man I used to bring lunch to.

The man I helped after he collapsed in the parking lot.

The man Vanessa once called "useless."

Tears filled my eyes.

The letter continued.

"Character matters more than talent."

"You were the only employee who treated me like a human being."

"The company deserves someone like you."

I looked up.

The room was staring at me.

Vanessa looked terrified.

Then the chairman delivered the final blow.

"Ms. Cole."

Vanessa swallowed hard.

"Yes?"

"You now report directly to Ms. Mitchell."

For the first time in her life...

Vanessa had no comeback.

But then the board's legal advisor stood.

His face looked grim.

"We have another problem."

The room turned toward him.

"What problem?" I asked.

He opened a file.

And suddenly all eyes landed on Vanessa.

May you like

"Financial fraud."
