CHAPTER 2: THE FILE THAT DIDN’T EXIST
CHAPTER 2: THE FILE THAT DIDN’T EXIST
The room erupted instantly.
“What did he just say?”
“Owner?”
“Is this a joke?”
I couldn’t move.
Daniel Vance walked straight toward me.
And for the first time, I noticed something strange.
The security guards weren’t reacting to him like they were surprised.
They were reacting like they already knew.
He handed me a black folder.
“No one was supposed to find you tonight,” he said quietly.
My fingers shook as I opened it.
Inside was a contract.
My name.
Not as employee.
Not as manager.
As majority shareholder.
I looked up.
“This is fake.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
Lena suddenly screamed from behind security.
“You’re lying! She’s nobody!”
Daniel didn’t even turn.
“Amara,” he said calmly, “do you remember your uncle?”
My throat tightened.
“My uncle died when I was twelve.”
Daniel nodded.
“He didn’t die.”
The room went silent again.
My pulse roared in my ears.
“What are you talking about?”
He turned the folder to page two.
A photograph.
My uncle.
Standing beside Daniel.
Smiling.
Alive.
I stumbled back.
“No…”
Daniel’s voice stayed steady.
“Your uncle built Vance Global with me.”
Lena laughed hysterically.
“This is insane!”
Daniel finally looked at her.
And said something that shut her up instantly.
“You were hired to monitor her.”
Lena froze.
My stomach dropped.
“What?”
Daniel turned back to me.
“But you weren’t supposed to notice.”
My head spun.
“Notice what?”
He lowered his voice.
“The company has been running under your name for three years.”
Silence.
Then—
A notification chimed from my phone.
Unknown sender.
“They found you. Leave now.”
My blood ran cold.
Daniel read the message over my shoulder.
And for the first time…
May you like
He looked worried.
