Chapter 3: Ghosts Don’t Forgive

The private facility was heavily guarded, but Colonel Harlan had taken down worse places with half a team.

He and Lila stormed the building with a court order from a real judge — one Harlan’s military connections had woken up in the middle of the night. Inside, they found Sophie sedated in a cold room.

“Mommy!” Sophie cried when she saw them, reaching out with tiny arms.

Lila scooped her up, crying. “I’ve got you, baby. I’ve got you.”

Marcus and Evelyn were waiting in the lobby with police. “Arrest them!” Marcus shouted. “She kidnapped my daughter!”

Harlan stepped forward. “Go ahead. Arrest me.”

But the officers hesitated when Harlan’s phone connected to a speaker. A high-ranking general’s voice filled the room, exposing every bribe, every falsified document, and the attempted murder charges for starving a child.

Marcus’s face went white. “This is impossible…”

Evelyn screamed at the officers. “Do something! We own this city!”

By the end of the week, the empire crumbled. Marcus was arrested for child endangerment, fraud, and conspiracy. Evelyn faced charges for accessory and attempted murder. Their assets were frozen.

In court, Harlan stood tall as he presented undeniable proof — including hidden cameras he’d planted during the rescue. The judge awarded Lila full custody and a restraining order that would last forever.

Months later, Lila opened a small bakery downtown with money from the divorce settlement. Sophie thrived there, covered in flour and laughter every afternoon.

Colonel Harlan retired from active duty and moved nearby. Every evening he sat on the porch telling Sophie exaggerated but cleaned-up war stories while Lila watched them with peaceful eyes.

One night, Sophie asked, “Papa Ghost, are you going away again?”

Harlan kissed the top of her head. “No, sweetheart. My war’s over. You and your mom are my home now.”
