Chapter 3: The Final Betrayal

“Jess, put that down!” I yelled, stepping between her and Ryan. My sister’s face was blotchy with rage, mascara running. She looked like a stranger.

“You always were Dad’s favorite,” she spat. “Little miss perfect. But he screwed us all. I saw the papers in the lawyer’s trash. Ryan gets everything because of some secret kid? Bullshit.”

Ryan held up his hands. “Jess, this isn’t about taking from you. Dad wanted Lily to have a chance. He felt guilty.”

“Guilty?” Jess laughed, but it sounded like crying. “Mom spent thirty years pretending everything was fine while he had another woman on the side. I found the letters years ago. I burned most of them. Thought if I kept the family together, maybe he’d leave it to us.”

The truth hit like a slap. Jess had known. She’d covered for him, maybe even helped hide it.

I turned to Ryan. “The last thing Dad mentioned—what was it?”

He looked at Jess, then me. “There’s a second will. One he wrote before the cancer got bad. It splits everything three ways—us kids. But he changed it after Lily was born. The original is in a safety deposit box. Key’s in the safe too.”

Jess lowered the rifle a fraction, then raised it again. “Give me the key, Anna. We can fix this. Burn the new will. Mom never has to know the rest.”

Sirens wailed in the distance—someone must have called the cops when they saw the truck and the lights. My heart pounded. Ryan met my eyes, and for the first time in years, I saw my brother again. Not the runaway. Family.

I reached into the safe, pulled out the second key, and held it up. “No more secrets, Jess. We do this right. Together. Or not at all.”

Jess’s face crumpled. The rifle clattered to the floor as red and blue lights flooded the windows. She sank to her knees. “He ruined us all.”

Ryan put a hand on my shoulder. The cops would be here in seconds. Whatever came next—court, tears, maybe even healing—Dad’s last secret had finally dragged us all into the light. And none of us would walk away unchanged
