Chapter 5: The Choice I Was Never Meant To Have
Alarms suddenly echoed through the building.
Red lights flashed.
The woman in the white coat looked nervous for the first time.
“They found her too early.”
Dorian grabbed my wrist.
“Move.”
“What’s happening?”
He pulled me toward an elevator.
“They’re not supposed to wake you yet.”
I resisted.
“Wake me?!”
The doors closed.
He looked at me.
And said:
“You are not just a donor.”
A pause.
“You are a continuation candidate.”
My mind shattered.
The elevator moved downward.
Far deeper than I expected.
Then stopped.
Doors opened.
And I saw it.
Hundreds of pods.
Human silhouettes inside.
Sleeping.
Waiting.
Some of them looked like me.
Dorian stepped beside me.
“This is what happens when people like us die too early.”
He turned.
“And the system has to replace them.”
My throat went dry.
“So I’m… what? A replacement?”
He shook his head.
“No.”
“You’re an upgrade.”
The alarms grew louder.
Dorian looked at me one last time.
And said:
“They’re coming.”
I looked at the pods.
At the system.
At the truth I never asked for.
Then whispered:
“I didn’t agree to any of this.”
Dorian nodded.
“That’s why you get a choice now.”
The elevator doors behind us opened again.
Shadow figures entered.
And Dorian said:
“Stay… and you become part of it.”
“Leave… and you erase yourself from it forever.”
I looked at the world I never knew existed.
And made my decision.
