Chapter 18 - The King

Isabella remembered very little about Arturo.

He came twice.

He spoke gently.

He brought candy she was not allowed to eat.

He asked questions about me.

He asked whether I loved Beatriz.

He asked where I kept important documents.

Beatriz had told Isabella he was an old family friend.

Rosa remembered seeing him from a distance.

She identified Arturo from an old photograph.

The dead man was alive.

Police searched properties connected to his former companies.

Nothing.

Then Lucia remembered a hunting estate in northern Portugal.

Arturo had loved it.

Portuguese authorities joined the investigation.

The estate was registered to a foundation in Panama.

Aerial surveillance showed recent activity.

We expected Arturo to run.

He did not.

He invited us.

A message arrived through his attorney.

Gabriel and Lucia only.

Carmen refused.

Arturo threatened to disappear if police entered first.

We negotiated.

Hidden surveillance.

Armed teams nearby.

Lucia insisted on going.

“He is my father.”

“He held you prisoner.”

“Mercedes did.”

“He built the system that allowed her to.”

Lucia looked at me.

“I need to hear him say why.”

We entered the estate at sunset.

Arturo sat beside a fireplace.

He was eighty-two.

Thin.

Elegant.

Alive.

“Lucia.”

His voice broke.

For one second, he looked like a father.

Then he looked at me.

“Gabriel.”

I hated him immediately.

Lucia did not sit.

“Did you know?”

“About your captivity?”

“Yes.”

He closed his eyes.

“Eventually.”

“And you left me there?”

“I was trying to dismantle Mercedes without exposing myself.”

Lucia laughed through tears.

“Five years?”

“I made terrible calculations.”

“No.”

She stepped closer.

“You made choices.”

The sentence echoed what I had told Beatriz.

Arturo admitted he created the financial network decades earlier.

At first, it hid money.

Then clients demanded protection.

Then protection became coercion.

Coercion became violence.

Mercedes grew powerful.

Javier’s father stole from them.

My father and Rafael discovered it.

Arturo ordered intimidation.

Mercedes ordered killings.

He claimed he never authorized murder.

I did not care.

“You built the machine.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then you watched it eat our families.”

“Yes.”

“Why come back now?”

“Because Mercedes was arrested.”

“No.”

Lucia stared at him.

“You came back for the master key.”

Arturo’s silence confirmed it.

He wanted control of the remaining accounts.

Even now.

Even after everything.

The old man had invited us because he believed blood would make Lucia surrender the key.

She laughed.

Then she removed the memory chip from her necklace.

Arturo’s eyes widened.

“You have it?”

“Yes.”

Lucia held it over the fire.

“Lucia.”

He stood.

“Think carefully.”

“I have.”

She dropped it.

Arturo lunged.

The chip fell into the flames.

His face collapsed.

Then Lucia looked at me.

I understood.

The chip was another copy.

The real evidence was already with prosecutors.

Arturo realized it too late.

Police entered.

He did not resist.

As they handcuffed him, he looked at Lucia.

Arturo's arrest triggered raids in four countries.

Former allies began cooperating before someone else could name them first.

The empire collapsed with astonishing speed once fear changed direction.

For decades, people had obeyed because they believed Arturo's network was untouchable.

The moment that belief disappeared, loyalty disappeared with it.

“I did all of this to protect what I built.”

Lucia answered quietly.

“That’s why you lost everything.”

Arturo was taken away.

The network finally had no king.

But our family still had one final battle.

Beatriz’s criminal trial began three months later.

And her defense attorney announced that she intended to call Isabella as a witness.
