CHAPTER 3 The Person He Trusted Most

Daniel sat frozen in front of the computer.
The video had ended.
But the voice remained.
A voice he knew.
A voice he had trusted.
A voice that had been in his home.
At his dinner table.
Around his children.
His hands slowly tightened into fists.
"No..."
He replayed the final seconds.
Again.
And again.
The same words.
The same voice.
"You should have stayed gone, Rachel."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Because there was no way he wanted to believe it.
But deep down...
He already knew.
That afternoon, Daniel left the children with Mrs. Gloria, their elderly neighbor who had helped them survive the past months.
Before leaving, Lily grabbed his sleeve.
"Dad?"
He turned.
"Yeah?"
"Are you going to find Mom?"
Daniel looked at his daughter.
The little girl who had spent months pretending she wasn't scared.
The little girl who had become a parent when she was supposed to be a child.
"Yes."
He knelt in front of her.
"I'm going to find out what happened."
Lily hesitated.
Then whispered:
"Is Mom in trouble?"
Daniel didn't lie.
Not this time.
"I think she was."
The girl's eyes filled with tears.
"But she's coming back, right?"
Daniel swallowed hard.
"I'll do everything I can."
Lily nodded.
Then she hugged him.
Not like a child hugging her father.
Like someone who had been waiting months to feel safe again.
Daniel drove straight to the person he needed to confront.
His younger brother.
Michael Brooks.
The man who had handled their family finances while Daniel was deployed.
The man who helped Rachel with paperwork.
The man who always told Daniel:
"Don't worry. I'll take care of everything here."
Daniel found him at his office.
Michael smiled when he saw him.
"Brother."
He stood up.
"You're finally back."
Daniel didn't smile.
"We need to talk."
Michael noticed immediately.
Something was wrong.
"What happened?"
Daniel placed the loan documents on the desk.
Michael's face changed.
Only for a second.
But Daniel saw it.
"You know what this is."
Michael looked away.
"I can explain."
Those four words confirmed everything.
Daniel's voice became cold.
"Explain why my signature is on a loan I never signed."
Michael sat down slowly.
"It wasn't supposed to happen like this."
Daniel stared.
"What wasn't?"
Michael ran a hand through his hair.
"Rachel found out."
"Found out what?"
Silence.
Then Michael said:
"That your company benefits were being redirected."
Daniel felt his stomach drop.
"What?"
Michael looked ashamed.
"I was handling your accounts while you were overseas."
"And I made mistakes."
"Mistakes?"
Daniel stepped closer.
"Millions of dollars don't disappear because of mistakes."
Michael couldn't look at him.
"I borrowed against the house."
"Why?"
"To cover losses."
Daniel laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
"You gambled our children's home."
"No."
Michael shook his head.
"I was going to fix it."
Daniel stared at him.
Everyone seemed to use the same excuse.
I was going to fix it.
After the damage.
After the lies.
After people got hurt.
"Where is Rachel?"
Michael went completely silent.
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"You know."
"No."
"Michael."
His brother looked away.
And Daniel knew.
He knew.
"Tell me."
Michael whispered:
"She was trying to expose me."
The room became still.
"Expose you?"
"She found the records."
"The transfers."
"The fake accounts."
Daniel's heart pounded.
"So you threatened her?"
Michael shook his head.
"No."
"I didn't want her hurt."
"Then what happened?"
Michael looked terrified.
"Someone else got involved."
"Who?"
Michael didn't answer.
Daniel grabbed the desk.
"Who?"
Finally...
His brother whispered:
"Your commanding officer."
Daniel froze.
"What?"
"Colonel Richard Hayes."
The name hit him like a bullet.
Richard Hayes.
The man who had recommended Daniel for every promotion.
The man who wrote letters praising his service.
The man Daniel considered a mentor.
"No."
Michael nodded.
"He knew about your benefits."
"He knew about your deployment schedule."
"He knew when you would be gone."
Daniel stepped backward.
The pieces began connecting.
The debt.
The forged documents.
Rachel disappearing.
The threats.
Someone had planned everything.
Someone had counted on Daniel staying away.
That night, Daniel returned home.
But something felt wrong.
The front door was unlocked.
He never left it unlocked.
"Lily?"
No answer.
His heart stopped.
He ran inside.
The living room was empty.
The kitchen was empty.
Then he heard a small voice.
"Dad..."
He turned.
Lily stood at the hallway entrance.
Holding Noah.
Both children were shaking.
"What happened?"
Lily pointed toward the table.
There was another envelope.
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
This time...
It wasn't of the children.
It was Rachel.
Alive.
Sitting in a chair.
Her face bruised.
Her hands tied.
Behind her was a wall.
And written across the picture:
YOU FOUND THE WRONG ANSWER.
A second message was attached.
COME ALONE IF YOU WANT YOUR WIFE BACK.
Daniel's blood turned cold.
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A man's voice spoke.
Calm.
Confident.
"You should have stayed away, Captain Brooks."
Daniel recognized it immediately.
"Richard."
A pause.
Then a quiet laugh.
"So Rachel told you."
Daniel's grip tightened.
"Where is my wife?"
"Safe."
"How do I know?"
"You don't."
The voice became colder.
"But you have something I want."
Daniel looked around the house.
"What?"
"The evidence."
"The flash drive."
Daniel said nothing.
The man continued:
"Bring it to the old military base tonight."
"Come alone."
"Or your wife disappears forever."
The call ended.
Daniel stood in silence.
Then he looked at Lily and Noah.
His children.
The reason he had survived every battlefield.
And he made a decision.
He wasn't going to the old base just to save Rachel.
May you like
He was going there to end this.
Forever.
