Chapter 9 - The Boardroom Screen

At nine the next morning, Preston walked into the Whitmore Health boardroom wearing a gray suit and the expression he used when reporters asked hostile questions.
Calm.
Measured.
Slightly disappointed in everyone else.
Emily watched from a laptop in Raymond's office across the hospital campus.
Lila had agreed to the arrangement on three conditions.
Emily remained seated.
She ate breakfast.
And if the monitor showed contractions, the meeting ended whether capitalism approved or not.
Emily agreed.
Raymond sat beside her.
Camille remained off camera.
The Whitmore board had eleven members.
Four longtime Preston allies.
Three independent physicians.
Two finance executives.
Gerald Whitmore.
And Dr. Helen Mercer, a retired cardiologist who had once thrown a stapler at a consultant for calling nurses a labor unit.
Emily had always liked Helen.
Preston opened the meeting.
"Thank you for joining on short notice."
Helen interrupted.
"We had to. The lender froze your refinancing and our chief executive's girlfriend got arrested in maternity."
Preston's jaw tightened.
"Vanessa is not my girlfriend."
Emily almost admired the commitment to useless distinctions.
Helen looked at the other board members.
"Wonderful. Then this is less embarrassing than I thought."
Gerald rubbed his temple.
Preston continued.
"Yesterday's incident has created confusion around the Saint Claire relationship. I called this meeting to protect hospital operations from emotionally driven interference."
Emily felt Raymond shift beside her.
She touched his wrist.
Wait.
Preston spoke for eight minutes.
He described Raymond's actions as unilateral.
He described the funding freeze as reckless.
He described Emily as vulnerable, distressed, and heavily influenced by her uncle.
He never mentioned the forged signature.
He never mentioned Vanessa's kick.
He never mentioned eighteen million dollars in missing charity funds.
Finally, he proposed a temporary resolution suspending Raymond as property liaison and declaring Emily's beneficiary directives subject to review until her "current emotional crisis" passed.
Helen stared at him.
"Are you asking us to declare your wife incompetent because your employee assaulted her?"
"I'm asking for stability."
"That's not what I asked."
Preston looked toward the screen.
"Emily, I wish you were not being put through this."
Emily nearly smiled.
There it was.
He spoke to her like she was an audience member at her own life.
She unmuted.
"I'm ready."
Preston blinked.
"Ready for what?"
Camille connected the first document to the shared screen.
The forged spousal consent appeared behind Emily's video window.
"For facts."
The room became silent.
Emily explained the signature.
She did not embellish.
She admitted she had signed other financial authorizations in the past without reading every page.
Preston relaxed slightly at that.
Then Emily continued.
"This one is not mine."
Camille displayed handwriting analysis from a preliminary forensic review.
The board shifted.
Preston interrupted.
"That review is not conclusive."
"Correct," Emily said. "Which is why I reported it rather than declaring a crime myself."
Next came the North River side letter.
Then the Cross Meridian purchase option.
Then the transfer ledger showing eighteen-point-four million dollars leaving the maternal housing fund.
Gerald stared at Preston.
"You told me those funds were temporarily swept for cash management."
Preston's face changed.
"They were."
Camille unmuted herself.
"Restricted charitable funds cannot be swept into a related-party consulting company."
Preston's voice sharpened.
"This is privileged finance material."
"Not when it concerns Saint Claire property or restricted donations."
Helen leaned forward.
"Who owns Meridian Clinical Strategy?"
No one answered.
Camille displayed the corporate registry.
Howard Cross owned eighty percent.
Vanessa owned twenty.
The room erupted.
Preston raised both hands.
"I can explain every transaction."
Emily waited.
He did not.
Instead, he looked directly into the camera.
"Emily, you are letting Raymond weaponize our marriage."
That was when she played the hospital audio.
The speakers carried Vanessa's voice first.
If she signs today, Cross releases the bridge extension.
Then Preston.
She won't sign if she knows what it is.
Then Vanessa.
You said she always signs when you put tabs on the pages.
Nobody in the boardroom moved.
Preston looked as if someone had drained the blood from his face.
Emily stopped the recording before the assault.
She did not need to show the kick.
The point was already made.
"I am not asking this board to punish Preston because he cheated on me," she said.
Her voice shook once.
She let it.
"I am asking you to stop pretending a marriage gives a chief executive permission to use his spouse's name as collateral."
Helen turned toward the corporate secretary.
"I move to suspend Mr. Whitmore pending independent investigation."
One of Preston's allies objected.
Another asked for counsel.
Gerald said nothing.
Then, slowly, he raised his hand.
"Second."
Preston stared at his father.
"Dad."
Gerald did not look at him.
The vote passed seven to four.
Preston was suspended immediately.
Not fired.
Not ruined.
Suspended.
Emily felt no satisfaction.
Only exhaustion.
The board secretary moved to the next item.
Then Camille's phone buzzed.
She read the message and went still.
Emily noticed.
"What?"
Camille stepped away from camera.
"We have a problem."
"Another one?"
"North River did not originate the seventy-four-million-dollar facility."
Raymond frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"They bought it yesterday from a smaller lender."
"Which lender?"
Camille turned the screen toward them.
The seller's name appeared at the top of the assignment agreement.
WHITMORE FAMILY CREDIT PARTNERS.
Emily looked at Gerald on the boardroom screen.
His face told her he had seen the same thing.
The debt threatening Preston's company had been created inside his own family.
And Gerald Whitmore suddenly looked more frightened than his son.
