Chapter 1: The Silver Ribbon

Carter was still smiling when the lid came off. He leaned forward with lazy, alcohol-infused arrogance, expecting a mother's pathetic attempt at a counter-gift. A scrapbook, perhaps. Or some sentimental family heirloom he could later mock in private.

Then Emily lifted out the first document.

The heavy, high-grade bond paper caught the light of the crystal chandeliers, and the golden seal of the State Supreme Court glinted like a weapon.

"What is this?" Carter muttered, his smirk faltering as his eyes scanned the bold, capitalized letters at the top of the page.

"Read it out loud, Carter," I said, my voice dead calm, cutting through the suffocating silence of the ballroom. "Since you’re so fond of public announcements tonight, let everyone hear."

Vivian Blackwell’s smile had completely stiffened into a grotesque mask. She snatched the paper from Emily’s hands, her eyes racing across the lines. In a fraction of a second, the aristocratic color drained entirely from her face, leaving her a sickly, hollow gray.

"This... this is impossible," Vivian whispered, her voice cracking as she dropped the document onto the table, directly into a puddle of spilled champagne. "You can't do this. Not today."

"Mom? What is happening?" Emily asked, wiping a stray tear from her cheek, her voice trembling but no longer frightened.

"That document, sweetheart," I said, looking directly at my brand-new son-in-law, "is an emergency injunction freezing the assets of Blackwell Logistics. And the document beneath it? That is a foreclosure notice on the very estate they live in."

Carter slammed his champagne glass onto the table, shattering the stem. "Are you insane?! You're a high school teacher, Mrs. Hayes! You don't own anything! You can't touch my family's company!"

I let out a soft, humorless laugh.

"I was a high school teacher, Carter. Twenty-five years ago," I said, stepping closer to the head table until I was towering over him. "Before I built Hayes Global. Before I hid my name behind a blind trust so my daughter could grow up normally, without gold-digging parasites pretending to love her for her inheritance."
