Chapter 13 - Margaret’s Real Reason

The forged signature transferred my newly activated voting rights into a holding company called North Bridge Partners.

Elias swore the transfer would not survive court review.

“That’s not the point,” I said.

He looked at me.

“They don’t need it to survive forever. They need it to survive tonight.”

Sebastian understood first.

“The emergency board vote.”

“What vote?”

Andrew said nothing.

Margaret did.

“Sale of the company.”

Everyone turned.

She looked at her husband with naked hatred.

“Tell them.”

Andrew’s voice was quiet.

“Valle Hospitality has an offer.”

“From whom?” Sebastian demanded.

“A sovereign investment consortium.”

“You are selling my company?”

“Our company.”

“You do not control the votes.”

Andrew looked at me.

“Not until today.”

There it was.

The fake badge.

The fire.

The rushed deadline.

My signature.

Someone had planned around my arrival before I knew I was coming.

I looked at Margaret.

“You slapped me because you wanted me gone before I saw Sebastian.”

“Yes.”

The answer surprised everyone.

Even Andrew.

Margaret continued.

“I knew the invitation existed. I knew Clara had triggered the trust. I thought if I humiliated you badly enough, you would leave.”

“You could have asked.”

“You would have stayed.”

“Probably.”

“For what it’s worth, I regret the slap.”

“It’s worth nothing.”

“Fair.”

I almost respected her for that.

Almost.

“Why did you want me gone if Andrew needed my signature?”

Margaret looked at him.

“Because I didn’t know he had arranged the forgery.”

Andrew’s expression hardened.

She continued.

“I thought he wanted you here to legitimize the sale. I was trying to stop it.”

Olivia stared at her mother.

“You were trying to protect the company?”

“No.”

Margaret looked at her daughter.

“I was trying to protect you.”

Andrew laughed.

“Dramatic.”

Margaret turned on him.

“You put Olivia’s trust assets up as collateral.”

Silence.

Olivia went pale.

“What?”

Andrew said, “It was temporary.”

The family word for theft.

Temporary.

Margaret opened her phone and showed us a document.

Andrew had pledged Olivia’s inheritance against losses in North Bridge Partners.

If the sale failed, Olivia could lose everything.

If the sale succeeded, Andrew would clear the debt and consolidate control.

Margaret had not attacked me because I was poor.

She attacked me because she believed I was the match being carried toward a room full of gasoline.

That did not excuse her.

It changed her.

Reader engine, I thought bitterly. Every answer made someone worse and better at the same time.

Nathan entered with another file.

“Found something in the old badge system.”

He showed us the photo used on my forged credential.

It had not been taken from social media.

It came from a driver’s license scan.

The scan source was a hospital admissions desk in Dayton.

The same hospital where my mother died.

I felt cold.

“Who accessed it?”

Nathan looked at Margaret.

“Emily Voss.”

Margaret whispered, “The nurse.”

“Three days before Clara died.”

Andrew’s face did not move.

Then Olivia asked the question none of us wanted to ask.

“Dad, how did your people know Charlotte would be invited if Clara hadn’t died yet?”

The room went silent.

Andrew looked at me.

And for the first time, he looked afraid.
