Chapter 8 - Ethan Becomes a Suspect Again

Hayes dragged Ethan behind the filing cabinet.

Agents flooded the aisle.

Sarah screamed from across the street.

Noah shouted for Ethan.

The shooter fired once more.

Then silence.

Hayes pointed.

“Stay down.”

Ethan ignored her long enough to grab Caleb’s shoulder.

“Where?”

Caleb pressed both hands to his side.

“Graze.”

“Again?”

“Lucky family.”

“Shut up.”

Hayes’s medic reached them.

The bullet had cut across Caleb’s ribs without entering.

Painful.

Bloody.

Not fatal.

Ethan exhaled for the first time.

Then sirens arrived.

Local police.

Too fast.

Hayes looked toward the entrance.

“Who called them?”

An agent said, “Facility manager.”

Marcus Reed stepped out of the first unmarked car.

Hayes swore.

“He shouldn’t be here.”

Reed approached with three officers.

He looked at shattered metal.

Then at Caleb on the ground.

Then at Ethan.

“What did you do?”

Ethan laughed.

“Predictable.”

Reed pointed at Caleb.

“Witness says Ethan assaulted him earlier.”

Hayes stepped between them.

“Shots were fired from outside the facility.”

Reed held up a tablet.

“Security footage says otherwise.”

He played video.

Ethan stared.

The screen showed him and Caleb entering Unit 214.

Argument.

Ethan shoving Caleb.

Then the angle jumped.

A flash near Ethan’s hand.

Caleb falling.

It looked like Ethan shot him.

Impossible.

Edited.

Hayes grabbed the tablet.

“Where did this come from?”

“Facility server.”

“Original?”

“Downloaded copy.”

“Timestamp?”

Reed smiled.

“You’re the federal expert.”

Ethan looked at the frame.

Something wrong.

The angle included a camera mounted above Row C.

He had seen it earlier.

But the camera had faced the opposite direction.

“This is fake.”

Reed said, “Of course you’d say that.”

Caleb raised his head.

“He didn’t shoot me.”

Reed looked down.

“You’re in shock.”

“I know who shot me?”

“Do you?”

Hayes’s eyes narrowed.

“Detective, step back.”

Reed ignored her.

“Ethan Walker, you’re being detained pending investigation.”

Noah screamed from the gate.

“No!”

Ethan’s chest locked.

Not again.

Cuffs.

False evidence.

Reed’s face.

Same machine.

Hayes said, “No local detention.”

Reed smiled.

“You don’t control an assault investigation.”

“I control the federal corruption task force examining your conduct.”

The officers stopped.

That sentence landed.

Reed’s face hardened.

Then Hayes’s phone buzzed.

She looked at the screen.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

“Video metadata.”

An agent handed her another device.

The facility’s original file had been overwritten remotely seven minutes after the first shot.

Upload source:

Grant Auto Auctions server cluster.

Hayes turned the screen toward Reed.

“Interesting.”

Reed’s jaw tightened.

“Doesn’t mean anything.”

“It means someone connected to Grant pushed altered footage onto a storage server to make Ethan look like a shooter.”

Reed shrugged.

“Or Ethan’s people did.”

Ethan laughed.

“My people? I got out of prison today.”

Reed stared at him.

“You’ve always had people.”

Sarah shouted from behind the tape.

“Like my sister?”

Reed looked at her.

Too fast.

Hayes saw it.

“Detective.”

He turned.

“Where is Rachel Walker?”

Reed smiled.

“Missing.”

“Not what I asked.”

“I don’t know.”

Hayes stepped closer.

“Her voice reached a phone at this scene.”

“Then trace it.”

“We are.”

Reed’s smile tightened.

Hayes looked at Ethan.

“Come with me.”

“Am I arrested?”

“No.”

“Then Noah comes.”

“Ethan.”

“No.”

Hayes studied him.

Then nodded.

“Fine.”

They left through a back gate.

Caleb went in a federal medical vehicle.

Sarah brought Noah.

Reed stayed behind.

Watching.

In the SUV, Noah pressed against Ethan’s side.

He said nothing.

Ethan rested one hand on the boy’s shoulder.

Noah whispered:

“Are you going back?”

“No.”

“Promise?”

Ethan swallowed.

“I’m going to fight not to.”

“That’s not a promise.”

“No.”

Noah looked down.

At eight years old, he already understood adults lied when they promised things they couldn’t control.

Ethan hated that too.

Hayes sat across from them.

Sarah beside Noah.

“You said Rachel sent you.”

Hayes nodded.

“When?”

“Not directly.”

“What does that mean?”

“Four years ago, Rachel entered a federal witness-assistance channel tied to an organized auto-theft investigation.”

Sarah closed her eyes.

She knew some.

Not all.

Hayes continued.

“She gave us partial records. She was relocated temporarily.”

“Witness protection?”

“Not the full program.”

“What happened?”

“She disappeared from supervision eighteen months later.”

Ethan stared.

“You lost her.”

“Yes.”

“Did Reed find her?”

“We don’t know.”

“You keep saying that.”

Hayes’s face hardened.

“Because lies would be faster.”

Fair.

Ethan leaned back.

“Why trust you?”

“You shouldn’t yet.”

Also fair.

Hayes handed him a sealed envelope.

“Rachel left this with a contingency instruction.”

“When?”

“Before she disappeared.”

Ethan opened it.

Inside was one sheet.

Her handwriting.

If Ethan is released before I return, show him only after Reed tries to put him back.

Ethan looked at Hayes.

“That happened quickly.”

“Yes.”

He read.

Ethan,

If this gets to you, Marcus is moving faster than I hoped.

Caleb is guilty.

Do not excuse him.

But understand that Reed used him.

Thomas Grant is the center.

Ethan’s eyes stopped.

Then:

There is something Caleb does not know about his own blood.

Ethan looked at Sarah.

She looked confused.

He continued.

Ask Linda about Grant.

His mother.

Linda Walker.

Still alive.

Still sharp some days.

Forgetful others.

Hayes said, “There’s more.”

Ethan read the last line.

I took one file when I disappeared.

GRANT / WALKER.

Do not let Caleb see it until Linda tells the truth.

Ethan folded the page.

“Where is the file?”

“Rachel took it.”

“Then it’s gone.”

“Maybe.”

The SUV stopped at a federal office.

Hayes led them inside.

Secure conference room.

No windows.

No local police.

For the first time all day, Ethan’s shoulders dropped.

Then Hayes placed a second document on the table.

“Recovered from Rachel’s last secure upload.”

Ethan read.

DNA REFERENCE COMPARISON REQUEST.

SUBJECTS: CALEB WALKER / THOMAS GRANT.

His stomach dropped.

“Results?”

“Not included.”

“Why?”

“Rachel removed them.”

Sarah whispered, “She knew.”

Hayes nodded.

“Probably.”

Noah looked between them.

“Is Uncle Caleb not really Uncle Caleb?”

Ethan rubbed his face.

“He’s still my brother.”

“But maybe different dad?”

Everyone looked at the eight-year-old.

He shrugged.

“TV.”

Hayes almost smiled.

Then the secure door opened.

An agent stepped in.

“Ma’am.”

Hayes turned.

“What?”

“We got movement on Rachel’s emergency contact protocol.”

Ethan stood.

“What movement?”

“A one-time device just came online.”

“Where?”

“Ohio.”

His pulse hammered.

The agent placed a screen on the table.

One incoming text.

TELL ETHAN HIS MOTHER LIED ABOUT CALEB’S FATHER.

Then a second.

AND TELL HIM NOT TO TRUST THE FIRST FEDERAL AGENT WHO SAYS SHE FOUND ME.

Everyone looked at Hayes.

Hayes’s face went still.

Before Ethan could speak, another agent entered.

Not from Hayes’s team.

Woman.

Federal badge.

Gun holstered.

She looked directly at Ethan.

“Ethan Walker?”

“Yes.”

She closed the door.

“Do not say another word to local police.”

Then she looked at Noah.

“Rachel Walker sent me.”

May you like

CUT.
