Chapter 13 - MARGARET’S SECRET

Amy read the message three times.

Margaret’s signature.

Impossible.

Daniel was in surgery.

Vanessa had been found alive in an office building across town.

Evelyn was in custody.

Ryan was under police guard.

And now Daniel’s mother was somehow connected to Blackwell.

Amy called her.

Margaret answered on the first ring.

“How is Daniel?”

“In surgery.”

Margaret’s breath caught.

“Amy…”

“He was shot in the shoulder. Doctors say he should be okay.”

Margaret began crying softly.

Amy let her.

Then she said, “Why is your signature on a Blackwell contract?”

Silence.

The crying stopped.

“Amy.”

“Tell me now.”

“It isn’t what you think.”

Amy almost laughed.

“Your son uses that line too.”

Margaret exhaled.

“Five years ago, Harrison Freight almost failed.”

Amy froze.

“What?”

“Daniel never told you.”

“No.”

“He had expanded too fast. Fuel prices jumped. Two major clients defaulted.”

Amy sat down in the hospital corridor.

“How bad?”

“Very.”

“Bankruptcy?”

“Within weeks.”

Amy’s stomach turned.

“Why didn’t I know?”

“Daniel didn’t want you to.”

Of course.

More protection.

More secrecy.

Margaret continued.

“I signed a bridge agreement with Blackwell.”

“Without Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To save him.”

Amy closed her eyes.

There it was again.

The family disease.

Love expressed as control.

“What did Blackwell get?”

“A future purchase option if Daniel ever missed certain debt targets.”

“And did he?”

“No.”

“So the option expired?”

“It should have.”

Amy heard the fear in her voice.

“But?”

“Evelyn altered the agreement.”

Amy sat straighter.

“She forged it?”

“She changed the expiration language.”

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

“And you never told Daniel any of this?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because he was finally happy.”

Amy almost laughed.

“Happy?”

“With you.”

That silenced her.

Margaret continued.

“You changed him, Amy.”

“Apparently not enough.”

“No. More than you know.”

Amy stared through the glass doors toward the operating wing.

“He still became exactly what he hated.”

Margaret’s voice cracked.

“Sometimes people repeat what hurt them before they understand they’re doing it.”

Amy didn’t answer.

She wanted to stay angry.

Anger was simple.

But everyone in this family seemed to be carrying old wounds and handing them forward.

Daniel’s father controlled Margaret because he feared losing her.

Margaret secretly saved Daniel because she feared his failure.

Daniel controlled Amy because he feared abandonment.

And Amy?

Amy stayed silent for years because she feared conflict.

Nobody was innocent.

Some were just less guilty than others.

“Come to the hospital,” Amy said.

Margaret arrived forty minutes later.

She looked ten years older.

Amy handed her the phone with Ryan’s message.

Margaret read it.

“I’ll testify.”

“You may have to.”

“I know.”

“You could lose everything.”

Margaret looked toward the surgical doors.

“I almost lost my son tonight.”

Before Amy could respond, a doctor approached.

“Mrs. Harrison?”

Both women stood.

Amy’s heart stopped.

The doctor smiled slightly.

“He’s awake.”

Amy almost collapsed.

Margaret grabbed her hand.

“He’s asking for his wife.”

Amy looked down at their joined hands.

May you like

Then at the doctor.

And for the first time, she didn’t know if that word still belonged to her.
