Chapter 11 - Hospital Room 302

The fluorescent light overhead hummed with a dry, persistent rhythm, casting a pale, clinical wash over the pale green linoleum of Room 302. Elena lay beneath a crisp white hospital blanket, her frame looking impossibly fragile against the stiff mattress. The faint bruises along her wrists told their own silent story of weeks spent under lock and key.
"Marcus?" Her voice was barely a rasp.
I leaned forward, my hand moving slowly to cover her cold fingers. "I'm here, Elena. You're safe. You're out of there."
Her eyes opened fully then, wide and darting. "The... the lock. He put the deadbolt on the outside. Every time he left for the foundation gala... he turned the key twice."
"I know," I said. "The bolt is broken, Elena. Richard isn't going to turn any keys on you ever again."
"Lily... did he... did he hurt her? He said... he told me if I ever screamed, if I ever told anyone the truth about the foundation accounts, he would take her where I would never even hear her cry."
"Lily is safe," I interrupted gently. "She's in protective custody with people who are keeping her warm and fed. She's asking for you, Elena. She knows you're coming back."
A single tear spilled over her lower lid. The door clicked open softly, and ADA Vance stepped in, holding a leather folder filled with crisp legal documents.
"Mrs. Vance—Elena. I'm Assistant District Attorney Vance. We need your statement. Everything you can remember about the confinement, the threats, and the forged transfer documents Richard used to commit you."
Elena turned her head slowly on the pillow. She didn't hesitate. "Give me the pen," she whispered.
With deliberate, shaky strokes, she signed her full name at the bottom of the affidavit, detailing every month of illegal confinement, every threat made against Lily, and every fraudulent document Richard had filed.

"That's all we needed," Vance said quietly. "An arrest warrant for kidnapping and unlawful confinement is being signed by the judge right now. We're moving on him tonight."
