## CHAPTER 9 ## THE DOCTOR WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

The signature stared back at me.

---

Dr. Emily Carter.

---

The woman who saved my life.

---

The woman who stood beside my hospital bed when my heart stopped.

---

The woman who told my babies they were lucky to have a mother who fought so hard to stay alive.

---

The woman I trusted.

---

Was her name written on a document designed to take my children away?

---

---

"No."

I whispered.

---

Grant looked at me.

---

"I didn't want to believe it either."

---

I pushed the paper away.

---

"How did you get this?"

---

His eyes lowered.

---

"Samantha had copies."

---

"Why?"

---

"Because she wanted insurance."

---

I stared at him.

---

"Insurance?"

---

Grant nodded.

---

"Samantha never trusted anyone. Not even me."

---

---

For the first time...

I saw the truth clearly.

---

Everyone in this story had been using everyone else.

---

Grant used me.

---

Samantha used Grant.

---

My mother used my trust.

---

And now...

Maybe someone I trusted used my pain.

---

---

But I refused to believe without proof.

---

Not anymore.

---

I had spent too long believing people's words.

---

Now I needed facts.

---

---

"Where is Dr. Carter?"

I asked.

---

Grant looked surprised.

---

"I don't know."

---

"Find out."

---

He looked at me.

---

"Claire..."

---

I interrupted.

---

"If she betrayed me, I want to know why."

---

---

Three hours later...

Victoria called.

---

Her voice was serious.

---

"We found her."

---

"Where?"

---

"Her private clinic."

---

I grabbed my coat.

---

Grant stood.

---

"I'm coming."

---

I looked at him.

---

"You don't get to protect me now."

---

His face fell.

---

"I know."

---

A pause.

---

"But I need to help clean up what I destroyed."

---

---

I didn't answer.

---

But I let him come.

---

Not because I forgave him.

---

Because I needed answers.

---

---

Dr. Carter's clinic was quiet.

---

Too quiet.

---

When we entered...

She was already waiting.

---

She wasn't surprised.

---

That was the first thing I noticed.

---

She knew we were coming.

---

---

"Claire."

---

Her voice was soft.

---

Almost motherly.

---

That made it worse.

---

---

"Did you plan to take my children?"

I asked.

---

No greeting.

No small talk.

---

Just the truth.

---

Her face changed.

---

Pain.

---

Then guilt.

---

---

"I knew this day would come."

---

Grant stepped forward.

---

"Answer her."

---

Dr. Carter looked at him.

---

"You don't get to demand honesty after everything you've done."

---

The words hit him.

---

Because they were true.

---

---

She looked back at me.

---

"Claire..."

---

"Was it you?"

---

Silence.

---

Then she sat down.

---

"I made a mistake."

---

My heart sank.

---

"That means yes."

---

She closed her eyes.

---

"Yes."

---

---

The room felt smaller.

---

---

"Why?"

I asked.

---

"Why would you do that?"

---

She looked at her hands.

---

"Because I was scared."

---

I laughed bitterly.

---

"Everyone says that."

---

Everyone used fear as an excuse.

---

---

Dr. Carter took a deep breath.

---

"I owed Samantha."

---

I froze.

---

"Owed her?"

---

"My daughter needed surgery."

---

The room went silent.

---

"Samantha paid for it."

---

---

I stared at her.

---

"So you sold my children because she helped yours?"

---

Tears filled her eyes.

---

"No."

---

"That is not what happened."

---

"Then explain."

---

---

Dr. Carter opened a drawer.

---

She pulled out another file.

---

"I never submitted the guardianship papers."

---

I frowned.

---

"What?"

---

She looked at me.

---

"I created the documents because Samantha demanded them."

---

"But I never signed."

---

"Never filed."

---

"Never intended to use them."

---

---

Grant looked confused.

---

"Why?"

---

Dr. Carter looked at me.

---

"Because I knew what Samantha was."

---

---

A pause.

---

"Then why make them?"

---

"Because I was trying to collect evidence."

---

---

She opened the file.

---

Inside were recordings.

---

Emails.

---

Photos.

---

---

"I knew Samantha was planning something dangerous."

---

"She talked about removing Claire from the picture."

---

"She talked about raising the babies herself."

---

My stomach turned.

---

---

"Why didn't you tell me?"

---

Dr. Carter looked ashamed.

---

"Because I was afraid."

---

---

Again.

---

Fear.

---

---

"But you let me believe I was alone."

---

Tears rolled down my face.

---

"You let me think everyone had abandoned me."

---

Dr. Carter couldn't answer.

---

---

Then Victoria found something.

---

A small note attached to the documents.

---

She picked it up.

---

Her face changed.

---

"Claire..."

---

"What?"

---

She handed it to me.

---

The handwriting was familiar.

---

My grandmother's handwriting.

---

---

I read it.

---

"If you have reached this point, then you have discovered the final betrayal."

---

My breath caught.

---

Grandma knew.

---

Again.

---

---

"But do not judge everyone who failed you the same way."

---

I continued reading.

---

"Some people acted out of greed. Others acted out of fear. The difference is what they do when given the chance to tell the truth."

---

I looked at Dr. Carter.

---

She was crying.

---

---

Then came the final paragraph.

---

"Claire, there is one person who has been lying since before your marriage."

---

My heart tightened.

---

---

"Not Grant."

---

I froze.

---

Not Grant?

---

---

"The person who introduced you to him."

---

The room became silent.

---

---

My eyes moved slowly across the page.

---

Then I saw the name.

---

A name I never expected.

---

A name that changed everything.

---

---

Eleanor Whitmore.

---

My grandmother.

---

---

I dropped the letter.

---

"No..."

---

Grant looked shocked.

---

"Your grandmother?"

---

Victoria stepped closer.

---

"I don't understand."

---

---

Neither did I.

---

Because my grandmother was the one person I believed had protected me.

---

The one person who saw the truth.

---

The one person who never lied.

---

---

Then another document slipped from the envelope.

---

A marriage arrangement.

---

Created six years ago.

---

Before I ever met Grant.

---

---

And at the bottom...

Two signatures.

---

Eleanor Whitmore

and

Richard Holloway

---

---

My hands went cold.

---

Because suddenly...

The biggest question was no longer:

"Why did Grant betray me?"

---

It was:

May you like

---

"Was my entire marriage planned from the beginning?"
