Chapter 1 - The Can Lily Wasn't Supposed to Touch

Valentina kicked the broken cabinet door away from Gerald’s shoulder and bent for the soda can before anyone else could touch it.

Gerald stopped cursing.

That was what made her pause.

A minute earlier he had been red-faced, swinging a belt near a three-year-old child as if fear itself were discipline. Now he lay half under splintered wood with two capos holding his arms, and all he watched was the silver can in Valentina’s hand.

“Give me that,” he said.

Valentina turned the can once.

Cold condensation wet her palm, but the weight was wrong. Too heavy. Too dense.

Lily stood behind Nico Serrano’s leg, one small hand gripping his trouser seam.

Valentina’s eyes went to her daughter.

“You okay, baby?”

Lily nodded without lifting her face.

Gerald jerked against the men restraining him.

“She stole it.”

Valentina looked back at him.

“She reached into a cooler.”

“It wasn’t hers.”

“It was soda.”

Gerald’s jaw tightened.

Valentina pressed her thumb to the bottom rim.

The metal flexed.

Not factory-sealed.

Someone had cut the base and resealed it so cleanly that nobody would notice unless they were looking for it.

Evelyn pushed herself away from the shattered garden lattice. Blood beaded along one forearm where decorative wood had scraped her.

“Valentina,” she said. “Don’t.”

Every capo on the lawn went still.

Valentina took a steak knife from the luncheon table.

Gerald’s face changed.

“No.”

She pushed the blade under the bottom seam.

“Valentina.”

That came from Marco Bellini.

Her consigliere stood near the fountain in a charcoal suit that had not picked up a single piece of dust from the fight. His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“You should let security handle it.”

Valentina kept cutting.

The base came loose with a soft metallic pop.

No liquid spilled.

Inside the can was a black waterproof capsule wrapped in foam.

Lily peeked around Nico’s leg.

“Mommy?”

“It’s okay.”

Valentina pulled the capsule free.

Gerald kicked hard enough to knock one capo backward.

“Don’t open that!”

The second capo drove his knee between Gerald’s shoulder blades.

Valentina unscrewed the capsule.

A microSD card dropped into her palm.

On the inside of the cap, scratched by hand, were two characters.

C-7.

Something tugged at her memory.

A notebook.

Her father’s desk.

Domenico writing letters and numbers beside a map she had been too young to understand.

Gerald stared at the card as if it were a loaded gun.

Valentina crouched beside him.

“You nearly struck my daughter over this.”

Gerald swallowed.

“Listen to me.”

“You have one chance.”

“You don’t know what that is.”

“Then tell me.”

Evelyn made a strangled sound behind them.

Gerald ignored his wife.

His eyes stayed on Valentina.

“You read that card and this stops being about me.”

Valentina smiled without warmth.

“It stopped being about you the second you raised a belt near Lily.”

Gerald’s face went gray.

“You think you’re protecting her?”

He looked toward Lily.

Then back at Valentina.

May you like

“If you read what’s on that card, your daughter becomes the first person they kill.”
