Chapter 10 – The Voice Behind the Kitchen Wall

Chapter 10 – The Voice Behind the Kitchen Wall

The room went completely still.

Daniel Brooks' voice echoed through Evelyn's phone.

"The recordings weren't made by Mark."

"They were made by someone who lived in the house."

Every eye turned toward Mark's parents.

His mother looked confused.

His father slowly shook his head.

"It wasn't us."

Mark stared at the phone.

"Then who?"

Daniel answered.

"We're still identifying the voice."

"But whoever installed the recorder knew the layout of the house."

"And they knew exactly where to hide it."

Financial Crimes Division – Evidence Lab

A forensic technician enlarged the audio waveform on a computer screen.

"There are sixty-eight recordings."

Daniel frowned.

"How far back do they go?"

The technician clicked through the dates.

"The oldest one..."

"...was recorded twenty-one months ago."

Daniel immediately did the math.

That was months before Emily became pregnant.

Long before the marriage had completely fallen apart.

Someone had been documenting everything.

The technician pressed Play.

A woman's voice filled the room.

Soft.

Steady.

Familiar.

"Mark, Emily just paid the contractor."

Then Mark answered.

"Good."

"That means we can move the money tomorrow."

Daniel leaned closer.

"Who's the woman?"

The technician shook his head.

"We're running voice analysis."

Another recording started.

The same woman laughed quietly.

"She still believes you."

Mark chuckled.

"She trusts paperwork."

"Too bad she never checks it."

Daniel immediately paused the audio.

"Actually..."

He looked at the investigators.

"...she did."

Carter House

Deputies had finished photographing every room.

Boxes lined the hallway.

Mark sat silently at the dining table.

He looked exhausted.

His father finally broke the silence.

"Was there really another woman?"

Mark didn't answer.

His father stood.

"I asked you a question."

"...Yes."

The older man's shoulders slumped.

"I defended you all morning."

"I told everyone Emily misunderstood."

He slowly removed his wedding ring.

"I've been married forty-two years."

"Do you know what keeps a family together?"

Mark stared at the floor.

"The truth."

His father placed the ring back on his finger.

"And you buried it."

Emily's phone rang.

Daniel again.

"We identified the voice."

I tightened my grip on the phone.

"Who is it?"

There was a long pause.

"You should hear it yourself."

He emailed the recording.

Evelyn connected her laptop to a small speaker.

The room became silent.

Daniel's voice counted down.

"Recording Number Thirty-Two."

The audio began.

Mark's voice came first.

"She'll never leave."

Then the woman replied.

"Not until you make her."

Mark sighed.

"Once the baby comes..."

"...she'll be too exhausted to notice anything."

The woman laughed.

"Then ask for the divorce."

"Your parents will back you."

A cold feeling spread through my chest.

I knew that voice.

I had heard it almost every day.

It wasn't Rachel.

It wasn't his secretary.

It wasn't a client.

Slowly...

I looked toward the staircase.

Mark's mother had gone completely pale.

She whispered,

"...No..."

Evelyn stopped the recording.

She looked directly at Mark's mother.

"Mrs. Carter..."

"That sounds exactly like you."

The older woman staggered backward.

"I..."

"...I never said those things."

Daniel spoke through the speaker.

"We compared the recording to three public speeches Mrs. Carter gave at local charity events."

"The match probability is 99.8 percent."

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Mark's father slowly turned toward his wife.

"You knew?"

Tears filled her eyes.

"I only wanted to protect our family."

"Our family?" he asked quietly.

"You convinced our son to destroy his own."

She finally broke.

"It wasn't supposed to happen like this!"

She covered her face.

"The company was failing."

"The bank was calling every week."

"Mark said if Emily left..."

"...he could refinance everything."

I stared at her.

"You told your son to divorce me?"

She couldn't look at me.

"I thought..."

"...you'd recover."

"You had your grandmother's money."

"You'd be fine."

I held my son a little closer.

"And what about him?"

She finally looked at the baby sleeping peacefully in my arms.

For the first time...

She started crying.

Real tears.

"I never wanted to hurt my grandson."

"No," I said quietly.

"You just wanted to use him."

At that moment, another investigator rushed into Daniel's office.

"We found something else."

Daniel looked up.

"What?"

"A second storage device."

"Where?"

"Inside the recovered laptop battery."

Daniel frowned.

"What was on it?"

The technician slowly turned the monitor.

One folder.

One hundred and twelve video files.

The first filename read:

Kitchen_Camera_01.mp4

The second:

LivingRoom_14.mp4

The third:

Nursery_03.mp4

Daniel opened one at random.

The video showed the Carter kitchen.

Emily was standing at the stove, eight months pregnant, quietly making dinner.

Mark wasn't home.

His parents were sitting at the table.

His mother leaned toward his sister and whispered words that made everyone in the evidence lab stop breathing.

"After the baby is born..."

"...Mark will finally get the house."

Daniel immediately picked up his phone.

"Evelyn."

She answered.

"What happened now?"

His voice was steady.

"We no longer have a financial case."

"We have evidence of a coordinated plan."

Before Evelyn could respond, the courthouse clerk called on the other line.

She answered.

"Ms. Price?"

"Yes?"

"The judge has reviewed the new evidence."

"And?"

"The emergency hearing has been converted into a full evidentiary hearing."

She paused before adding,

"And Judge Collins has signed a temporary protective order."

Evelyn smiled.

"For Emily?"

"Yes."

"And one more thing."

"What is it?"

"The judge wants the baby brought to court tomorrow."

"Why?"

The clerk's answer stunned everyone.

"Because..."

"...she intends to decide temporary custody before anyone else can file."

The End

Epilogue

Three months later, Judge Rebecca Collins issued her final rulings.

Emily was awarded sole ownership of the house, full financial restitution for the misappropriated funds, and primary custody of her son. Mark received supervised parenting time until the family court was satisfied he could place his son's well-being ahead of his own interests.

The financial investigation resulted in civil penalties and criminal charges related to fraud, forged loan documents, and the misuse of marital assets. Lucas Turner testified truthfully, Rachel Bennett cooperated fully with investigators, and both played key roles in establishing the timeline of events.

Mark's parents divorced quietly the following year. His father later apologized to Emily in person, admitting that staying silent had been the greatest mistake of his life.

Emily renovated the nursery one last time—not to erase the past, but to create a home where her son would grow up knowing that love is measured by actions, not promises.

On the wall above the restored rocking chair, she framed a handwritten note from her grandmother:

"Kindness is a gift. Never let anyone mistake it for weakness."

Every night, as she rocked her little boy to sleep in that same chair, she remembered the morning she walked out with nothing but a suitcase, a baby, and one gray folder.

It turned out that was everything she needed.
