Chapter 19 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE CIRCLE

Ward had a gun under Mom’s chin.

Mom looked furious, not afraid.

“Evelyn bites,” Ward said. “Did you know that?”

Mom snapped, “Try me again.”

Even then, I almost smiled.

Ward saw it.

“Family resemblance.”

Noah aimed at her.

Ward aimed at Mom.

Eli moved slightly to my left.

Ward noticed.

“Still doing that, Eli?”

“Doing what?”

“Standing between Maya and consequences.”

He said nothing.

Ward looked at the laptop.

“Open CORE.”

Noah laughed.

“You came all this way to ask nicely?”

“I came because Maya won’t do it for you.”

My brother’s face changed.

Ward had found the crack.

She pushed.

“Noah spent seven years becoming the thing he hated, sweetheart. Did he tell you?”

“Shut up.”

“He ordered kidnappings. Bribed officials. Burned safe houses. All for the noble purpose of destroying me.”

Noah’s gun trembled.

Ward smiled.

“The Circle doesn’t corrupt people. It reveals them.”

I looked at Noah.

“Is she lying?”

He stared at the floor.

That was enough.

Ward whispered, “Say the phrase.”

“No.”

She pressed the gun harder against Mom.

Mom said, “Don’t you dare.”

“Mom—”

“Your father built that lock so nobody could force you.”

Ward laughed.

“David believed in moral architecture. Very expensive hobby.”

Eli took another small step.

Ward fired at his feet.

“Next one goes higher.”

I looked at the laptop.

The screen showed two choices.

RELEASE ALL.

TRANSFER VERIFIED EVIDENCE.

Noah hadn’t mentioned the second option.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked.

He followed my eyes.

“Maya—”

“Why?”

“Because verified transfer takes time. Ward could escape.”

“So your answer was expose every victim too.”

“To stop the Circle.”

Ward smiled.

“See? He’s ready.”

Noah’s face twisted.

He fired.

Ward jerked Mom sideways.

The bullet hit the door.

Chaos exploded.

Eli lunged.

Mom dropped.

Ward fired.

Noah cried out.

I hit TRANSFER VERIFIED EVIDENCE.

The screen demanded my voice.

Ward saw it.

“No!”

She knocked Eli down and aimed at me.

Mom grabbed Ward’s ankle.

Ward kicked her.

I shouted the phrase.

“Mercy without truth is control!”

The system chimed.

TRANSFER STARTED.

Ward fired.

Noah stepped in front of me.

The shot hit him in the chest.

He fell into my arms.

“Noah!”

Ward ran.

Eli chased her.

I pressed both hands to Noah’s chest.

“No. No, no, no.”

He looked at me, shocked.

Then he smiled weakly.

“You always were the smart one.”

“Save your energy.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t.”

“I used you.”

“I know.”

“I loved you.”

“I know.”

His eyes closed.

“Noah!”

The laptop chimed again.

TRANSFER COMPLETE.

Then a new message appeared.

REMOTE SOURCE CONNECTED.

USER: CUSTODIAN PRIME.

LOCATION: TEMPLE SOUTH CRYPT.

Ward hadn’t run away.

She had gone back to where everything started.
