Chapter 10 - Clear Count

The next stage began with a narrower problem. Hana is cleared and rewrites local inventory controls with her team. What mattered now was not how dramatic the discovery sounded, but whether it could survive someone else checking it.

For several seconds, Hana Kim heard only the ordinary sounds of Camp Pendleton supply warehouse. That normal noise made the confrontation feel sharper, not smaller.

Instead, she slowed the scene down. She looked at what was physically present, what had been said out loud, and what could still be proved tomorrow.

"You keep calling this settled," Hana Kim said. "It isn't settled just because you closed the folder."

"Watch yourself," Major Tom Rourke said.

"I am," she replied. "That's why I'm still asking."

Corporal Jensen did not rush to rescue her. That mattered. Instead, Corporal Jensen added one precise fact that could be checked independently, then stopped talking.

She thought about Hana must protect the chain of evidence without turning the warehouse into a spectacle or revealing operational details.. That desire could easily become a weakness if she tried to force the evidence to match it, so she kept writing down what she knew and what she only suspected.

Dates lined up badly for Major Tom Rourke. The more the sequence tightened, the less room there was for the explanation he had offered at the beginning.

Rumors moved faster than the investigation. By lunch, people who had never seen the evidence had strong opinions about it.

Every instinct told her to answer the insult. Experience told her to answer the evidence.

"You can still walk away from this," Major Tom Rourke said.

"I could," Hana Kim answered. "But the evidence would still be here when I left."

The clue was small enough to miss if someone was looking only for a confession: a shipping manifest routes controlled night-vision equipment to Rourke's home address and references a private militia buyer. Small evidence had a way of becoming important once the timeline stopped cooperating with the official version.

There was a difference between being certain and being able to prove why. She kept returning to that difference whenever the story became personal.

What stayed with her was not the confrontation. It was the moment the story stopped belonging to the loudest person in the room.

The review room had no drama in it: plain table, legal pad, water bottle, clock that seemed louder than it should. Hana Kim answered each question in order. When she did not know, she said so. That answer surprised the panel more than any accusation would have.

The practical consequence came quickly. Hana is cleared and rewrites local inventory controls with her team. Hana Kim wrote down what had changed and what still had not been answered.

A routine administrative detail became unexpectedly important. A signature, a routing stamp, a time field - nothing dramatic by itself. Hana Kim had seen enough investigations to know that ordinary details were often more trustworthy than dramatic memories.

Before the chapter of the day could close, one fact shifted the pressure again: Jensen signs the first new dual-verification sheet.
